These decisions are incredibly difficult when taken about people who are already seriously unwell and in need of human contact.

Unfortunately, we should inform that two nationals of Kazakhstan have tested positive for coronavirus. They arrived from Germany. Both of them were hospitalized. None of them has clinical symptoms, they feel well,» Yelzhan Birtanov said at a press conference in the Central Communications Service Office.

Apparently some students in UK from Kazakhstan have been told to return home.

    Which seems somewhat unnecessary/unwise(?)

UK Universities switching to online lectures and exams....

We're just about there with planning for when it is required (it's been a frantic week!). Advice on recording lectures in advance, running smaller group sessions remotely, and changing (written) assesssment workflows. We're not quite there yet with diagnostic testing - well the infra/platforms are there, but not training. Other things such as VLE, online classrooms, lecture recording capacity and guidance being prioritised.
Equipment being purchesd in bulk, not through normal channels as we can't get enough, to allow people to WAH for prolonged periods.
If you do have laptop, it goes home with you every night now.

*edit - our advice now on website, links going out imminently.

The UK government’s strategy is influenced by nudge theory, an idea first popularised by the behavioural economist Richard Thaler and political scientist Cass Sunstein. “Nudging” uses insights about our mental processes to change our behaviour through coaxing and positive assertion. Rather than forcing us to do things, nudging tweaks the environments in which we make choices – for example by requiring people to opt out of organ donation, rather than opting in.

thinking myself on the mend, popped out to refill a few bird feeders, a task normally undertaken in minutes without a second thought - returned indoors afterwards chastened with a return of the dizzy old headache and tight compressed lungs

every day is uncharted territory.. take it easy old timer..

Updated working arrangements at my work:

    - teams split in two, working from home on alternate weeks
    - if your partner also works in the office, arrange so that you are both in during the same week. If you are having an affair with a colleague this also applies.

We've been told not to go in for the foreseeable future and that it was likely we wouldn't see colleagues F2F for 3 months.

Would normally have missed my commute, but that may just coincide with the length of time I expect to be off my bike...

" it was likely we wouldn't see colleagues F2F for 3 months."
I wonder how long it will actually be. The current forecast announced in yesterday's press conference is that the peak will be around 10-14 weeks away. The strongest measures that the government are planning to put in will be around this peak - they are thinking these will last around 13 weeks. Presumably if the measures are successful, the peak will just last longer. So by moving too early, it may be a very long time home working.

From a scientific viewpoint, it will be interesting to compare the results of different governmental strategies. In particular, in those countries that hit very hard with strong restictions, will there be a rebound of the virus as soon as the restrictions slacken (assuming vaccine not ready)?

Wonderful. I once had the best seat in your building - glass on both sides and one of the most attractive women I've ever encountered at the desk in front. No connection to office affairs, I just wanted you to know that.

I'm expecting this weekend to be one of the best weekends for cycling since the one with the FA Cup Final and Royal (Wedding?/Baby?/Jubilee?).

My brother is a lecturer at St Andrews. He’s been self-isolating because of a cough this week and has just been told one of his students has tested positive.

Some Americans universities are closing their campuses and telling students to leave halls with as little as 48hrs notice.

Something of an On the Beach atmosphere at work.

Be ready to work from home.

Someone in the London office tested for CV.

    That person cleared.

    (A few hours later.)

Another person in the London office tested for CV..

I'd really like some stats from the cleaners on the amount of paper towels they've been installing. About 5 times as normal I'd say.

    Stay safe, everyone.

UoE transition to remote teaching by 23rd March.
    Most teaching cancelled next week.
Some exams cancelled, move to remnote exams for Y3+

Library open for now. Support staff will be at work doing a lot of staff training over the next few weeks...

Least the trains will be quiet by the looks of things...

this, from a former WHO director, seems good. https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1238425621375651840.html

I noticed that in that much circulated Radio 4 interview, the government's scientific advisor was quite cautious in what he said about the immunity/prevent a second, worse, outbreak in the autumn. the presenter made that argument, and he agreed, but he was very careful in what he said. as this guy says, we don't yet know that will be the case with this virus.
