"Sturgeon wants 'normal' schooling back 'as quickly as possible'"
1/3 of classroom time "not good enough".

Norway thinks the risk is small, have argued no evidence schhols spread the virus.

At the weekend Swinney said for schools to prepare for entire year of 'blended' learning and to prepare for no exam diet next year.
Quite honestly, we're approaching matter/antimatter levels of contradiction here.

Pressure from Daily Mail, Daily Express, Sky and Telegraph journos during press conference it would appear.
They were pointing out that in (some) other countries social distancing only 1 metre. However no other countries (except maybe Belgium) have had the death toll that UK has.
Possibilities:
- Social distancing in England will be reduced to 1 metre, pressure on Scotland, Wales, Norn Iron to fall in line.
- If 1 metre distance then Scottish government's 50% "shared aspiration"* will become possible.* - I use this term from "our" experience of shifting goalposts/"targets" caught in the crossfire between pressure groups, government and councils...

There was a school in Chesterfield which had a C19 case ‘linked’ to it. THis seems ton have put a scanner in the works down south.....
Think Scot Gov receiving direct feedback from parents??

Daily Mail also arguing to scrap school holidays.

I think "the science" has told the First Minister that tens of thousands of severely harassed parents are very unlikely to vote for the SNP in next year's general election.

In the Netherlands primary schools have been open at 50% since 11 May and at full capacity since last week.
No social distancing required between kids up to 12yo. That's anywhere, not just schools (teachers do need to keep their distance to children).
Health authorities researched in March and April and determined that children don't spread it significantly. No uptake in cases has been seen in primary schools in May.Posted 5 years ago # -
@ stiltskin
“For this all to work, surely we have to understand how the UK came to have the 3rd highest total deaths in the world.... & then not do whatever it was that led to them.
Or is that too simple?“Probably.
More to the point, probably too late.

Sorry to return to the "5 miles" debate
But I see the First Minister has visited her parents. I'm delighted for her, as I would be for anyone in similar circumstances (personally, as I require a ferry or plane, it's been over 4 months). Her most supportive organ suggests it is a 45-minute drive between their houses.
However, her own government's guidance states
"Are people allowed to travel to meet friends and family outside?
Yes, but you should stay in your local area if possible. As a guide we suggest ‘local’ to be no more than five miles from your house."This is not a good look or example, surely?

Just asking -
Are (nearly) all parents willing to send (their) kids to school?
Wasn’t the case fairly recently.
Posted 5 years ago # -
“This is not a good look or example, surely?“
Not defending NS, and certainly not the DC special interpretation, but “As a guide we suggest ‘local’ to be no more than five miles from your house” could be imagined to mean ‘regularly’ - so a visit to relatives (allowed due to revised rules) is ‘ok’ as a one-off(?)
Especially when guidance also says “but you should stay in your local area if possible.”
Obviously is possible never to leave your house and certainly possible to not go more than 5 miles.
It’s really just more mixed messaging.
NS isn’t working from home either.

@chdot
Maybe. Or maybe she's just got an iron bladder.
"Because of the high chance of the virus living on hard surfaces, we don’t want people using public toilets or going into someone’s home to use their toilet, so staying local avoids that problem."
But given she gave an interview a week or 2 ago which suggested she couldn't visit and we are still in the same phase, what has changed?

We have been to Livingston once, and relatives from Livingston have been to us once. We don't have any relatives within 5 miles.
Also our local High School is more than 5 miles away (that doesn't affect us) so presumably it won't be OK for them to go if rule still exists, what about more rural areas?
Posted 5 years ago # -
"Are (nearly) all parents willing to send (their) kids to school?"
May have no choice when they have been sent back to work in a few weeks...
Posted 5 years ago # -
As to the bladder question, no idea how anyone is managing, especially when there’s a chance of 2 weeks in prison -

"NS isn’t working from home either."
I confess I've wondered a few times how often NS travels from her work home to her actual home.
She seemed to always be at home for NHS clapping, and other photo things. Presumably stays at Bute house for ease of work often.
'We' don't seem to mind as much as say BJ going to chequers to recover, or other English politicians moving betweeen houses for work.Posted 5 years ago # -
The 5 miles ish thing was the distance you could drive before parking your car and taking some exercise. I think we are allowed to travel further to visit family. I was talking about driving* the 30 miles each way to Dunbar to see my parents - this is now likely to be next weekend as the guidance should be relaxed to say that we can go into their house (otherwise we'd have either watered their compost heap or gone behind a hedge en route...).
* previously we sometimes went by train and sometimes by car. As it isn't essential, we won't use the train.

“May have no choice when they have been sent back to work in a few weeks...”
Of course that will depend if they have work to go to
At present some of those going out to work are sending kids to school, so UK evidence of ‘risk’ must be available.
Posted 5 years ago # -
@fimm I’ve quoted verbatim above what the ScotGov guidance says about how far is allowed to see family & friends
I have no problem with anyone travelling any distance especially to see parents but if even the FM is ignoring it, it should be stripped from the guidance

“For this all to work, surely we have to understand how the UK came to have the 3rd highest total deaths in the world.... & then not do whatever it was that led to them.
Or is that too simple?“
Probably.
More to the point, probably too late."This is the issue, isn't it? The horse has well and truly bolted because the UK, applying a cavalier attitude, left the lockdown too late and, to add to the fun, appears to have done very little about testing or track and trace planning.
We could ask the French, Germans and Dutch for advice on how we get to where they are from our location but their response would be "I wouldn't start from there".
We can either now wait in lockdown longer than other countries to get that virus R number down to a safer level, or say screw it and muddle through, let folk catch it and just hope the health service isn't overwhelmed.
Best we can hope on the latter is that people take on board the wash your hands, wear a mask, don't have parties with all and sundry messaging. Maybe more exposure of individuals to the personal tragedy of a loved-one or friend of a loved-one will help with that? Wonder what the Nudge Unit thinks of that (although they seem to have been awfully quiet recently).
Scottish Government is skewered on the horns of the dilemma because England seems to be very much adopting the "screw it" approach.

“As it isn't essential, we won't use the train.”
Don’t think train travellers are getting interrogated.
Very few people are using trains at the moment, In Scotland face covering advised, in England required. Presumably it reflects higher number of users per train, but it’s an odd reversal of the general E/S risk/caution approaches.

"Are (nearly) all parents willing to send (their) kids to school?"
In August, yes. As long as social distancing rules are in place.
Posted 5 years ago # -
“In August, yes. As long as social distancing rules are in place.
Would you welcome 1 metre.
If not, would you accept?
Posted 5 years ago # -
"Are people allowed to travel to meet friends and family outside?
Yes, but you should stay in your local area if possible. As a guide we suggest ‘local’ to be no more than five miles from your house."This seems pretty easy to follow to me, but I can see it would fail a logical reasoning test. I assume it's worded like that due to not wanting (or being able) to be proscriptive and to allow some room for interpretation for personal circumstances.

“
Ms Sturgeon also revealed that a further 29 people have tested positive for the virus in Scotland since yesterday.
“
Yes, but where are they, how old are they, do they have other health issues, did I pass them in the street last week, etc?
Posted 5 years ago # -
“and to allow some room for interpretation for personal circumstances”
Well, yes, possibly - but...
Posted 5 years ago # -
NS also getting her hair done I tjhink?
I also know of a retired judge who went from Edinburgh to Glasgow
Soon I will cycle through to see my mum, after Thursday should get in the house
I have tried to abide by as many of the rules as possible. But have cycled further than 5 miles (and a couple of times lately a bit of a trek for the cavalry but always with A70 as the spine)
I am reluctant to take edinburgh germs to Ayr - my mum has friends (they know the judge) who have been very liberal in their interpretation.

Anyone still talking to you?
Or did you sell it as an adventure?
