Had a chip on my shoulder about Evans ever since they were the only bike shop that wouldn't take a stack of EdFoC programmes off my hands for public to pick up, because of central office rules. Took a handful for the staff / staffroom but it gave me really bad 'corporation plays at local bike shop' vibes. Obviously not the fault of local folks but whatever private equity vampires run head office these days.

Planning to move along the road - Inverleith Row - soon.

Edinburgh Bike Coop closing its Leeds store.
Like all retail the bike trade is very hard at moment.
Was looking for boots in Rose St on Monday and many places had no-one buying. Tisos did as 20% off boots at moment. They sponsor some local events so happy to buy. Amazon don't.
Likewise LB has bought childseats from EBC as they have supported events here. (Not sure about Leeds).Posted 6 months ago # -
@laidback - all boots even the Meindl ones i bought for full whack in October? I did get a free pair of laces though
Posted 6 months ago # -
@gembo - mine were Merrell ones with laces at 20% off. May need to buy longer ones.

Wearing liner socks then thicker socks has died out as has wrapping the laces round the top of the boots. Boots are tiny now of course. I am size 8 show but size nine in Meindl boots

Went to the Evans Cycles reopening on Friday. Free drinks, pizza, Endura merino buffs and also a raffle wjtb good prizes such as turbo trainers, bike stands, handlebars, saddles etc. Also 20% off on everything that night.
A fun night and good chats. Quite a lot of bike mechanics from other shops came along so good to see them all supporting each other.
The shop looks good. Better than Biketrax. The top floor is more MTB stuff. Downstairs clothing, parts and various bikes.
I was glad to learn that they retained all the staff during the limbo months.

@chdot Substance Cycles will be reopening nearby in January I was told. They are a sister shop to Projekt Ride.

“They are a sister shop to Projekt Ride.“
Yes
There’s also the Queensferry branch.
And - rumour, rumour, might be considering another Edinburgh branch.

Sometimes I think there should be a comprehensive directory.
Then again…

I was in one Bike Shop this morning talking Towpath Talks and Wolves with Mackenzie and then on way home cutting through the incongruously named Kingfisher estate the Soul Cycle van was parked and a gravel bike was being tested.

“And - rumour, rumour, might be considering another Edinburgh branch.“
May still be true, but the one they were looking at didn’t work out.
One Edinburgh shop likely to have new owners by end of month.

Noticed Fettle at Fountainbridge recently. https://www.fettle.cc/
Looks to be far bigger than any other bike repair place I've seen (I think the building was a car repair place originally?). Appears to be a chain, with about 20 locations across the UK (half in London). Anyone know anything more about them?

@frenchy, think there was a view. On here about them being expensive?

Substance* Cycles has opened at 6a Montague Terrace.
Opening evening tonight (6th of Jan 2026) 7-9pm with snacks and drinks etc TimTams will be provided I am told. And all welcome to pop by.
*I kept forgetting the name of the shop but MacKenzie told me (and his wife) to think of "illegal substances". And yes, that worked. Now I remember the name.

TimTams seem ubiquitous these days. But are they the real Tim Tams or just Penguins in disguise?

Looking like Bike Smith (Haymarket) is now closed? Google maps claims so anyway.

The bike shop in Cameron Toll/Savacentre has also closed. :-(

I was surprised to read this, as I was sure that it was open when I passed last Thursday. So I stopped by on my way home.
Anyway, it is still open, but under a new name of "The Bike Emporium" (Very little signage)
While I was trying to figure out if it was open or not, the owner came out to see if I needed anything. Spotted that my back wheel didn't quite loom right, go it sorted and this seems to have fixed the creak that I thought was coming from my Bottom Bracket!

Also this should give a map of all the current Edinburgh Bike Shops:

Nice/useful map (presume based on OSM data)
Shows two shops for BG in Portobello
Is that still the case?
Posted 1 day ago # -
Aye. Main shop on the east side of the street and a workshop on the west.

Did a comparison of that Overpass query and EdFoC’s bike map recently and sent them some updates - in future maybe I’ll nerd up enough on OSM to do the ‘paper round’ and marshalls / feeders maps using it but for now Google My Maps has been the lowest friction. It was when I was checking open hours that I saw Bike Smith Haymarket permanently closed - wonder if it’s the same folks running it or not. They had a sideline in holding luggage for folks given proximity to the station!

I assume that the Bike Smith on Causewayside is no relation to the one at Haymarket that has been replaced by the Bike Emporium. Unless anyone can confirm otherwise? That assumption is based on some poor reviews for the Haymarket one eg this one (which review Google unfortunately seems to think applies to the Emporium, which I don't think it can do since the reviewer says they'd been a customer "for years") compared to the consistently glowing feedback for the Causewayside shop.

Yeah no relation between Causewayside and the Haymarket bike smiths.

There was originally some sort of ‘franchise’ arrangement - Morningside too
Didn’t work out

Interlaced Cycles (new occupoier of Eastside Bikes' premises) confirmed on instagram that opening day is 6th June 2026. 10% off purchases and service bookings made that day.
