”Two new bus lane cameras in Edinburgh raise £297,000 from fines in 8 months”

Neil Greig, policy and research officer at IAM Roadsmart, said: “To my mind this is a total failure - a bus lane camera is supposed to keep people out of bus lanes in order to allow the buses to run freely. If you’re catching that many people then clearly there’s something wrong with the signposting or the road markings because, particularly in Edinburgh, people are well used to bus lane cameras. I’m amazed there is one particular set of cameras making so much money.”

I think fines are £30 a pop, going up to £60 for repeat offences or not paying quickly [Citation - @IWRATS].

So £297000 means, ~10000 offences in eight months at two locations. Which is ~20/day per camera, or roughly five per hour of operation (in each direction).

Before the camera was put in, there would've been closer to 5 people/minute driving in each bus lane. So, this seems like pretty good evidence that the cameras do "keep people out of bus lanes".

That thirty sheets is certainly a decent aide-memoire though to be fair I haven't changed the time on the automobile's dashboard chronometer yet.

I will drive on that road once a week when returning from my supply drop.

If they upset Greig then they're definitely working!

The only thing I'd say is they imply you must have access to an accurate timepiece at all times when driving, presumably only a few minutes out will get you fined. One of the reasons cyclists are exempt from the speed limit is because they have no requirement to carry a calibrated speed meter.

I propose adding a simple dashboard clock independent of all other electronics to the dash and have it included in the mot.

I once stopped my bicycle in a bus lane beside a police car with a car behind me at 09h15 and theatrically mimed looking at my watch and looking at the car stuck behind me and they mimed not seeing me at all.

The car driver had just punishment-passed me otherwise I'd not have bothered.

They're invisible really. How could anyone be expected see the bright white lines, arrows and blue signs. Very unfair.

Interestingly the camera is actually mounted on a fairly thin pole with the 'end of bus lane' sign.

Perhaps people are expecting a garishly large camera akin to the Shore and hence driving in the bus lane as they think there isn't really a camera.

So, the Tories are arguing that a pricing mechanism is ineffective in producing the desired effect - i.e. bus lane fines are not deterring people from driving in the bus lanes. That probably means the price is too low. To help meet the Tories concerns, the Council should progressively increase the fine, say in £10 increments, until it has the desired effect. Surely a proposal the Tories can get behind - or do they not believe in the principles of the free market?

The bus lane fines should be a percentage of the driver's total wealth.

Otherwise the Duke of [Redacted] can just drive in them willy-nilly.

That happened to the king of Sweden (actually Finnish owner of Nokia - fined 100,000 pounds equivalent for speeding) So he gave them everything they were needin

Then Minnie took up with a guy named Smokey
She loved him tho he was Cokey.

@morningsider they believe in the principle of the freemarket in that they will dance to the tune of the piper who pays them the most (Shell/BP/Ford)

Surely they should be more worried about the eyesight/driving standards of these drivers.

If they can't see the bus lane perhaps they shouldn't be driving!

    https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/news/people/edinburgh-council-makes-an-eye-watering-ps1m-revenue-from-bus-lane-fines-3627114

Edinburgh came eighth on the list, with the council raking in a total of £1,094,585 from 36,492 fines issued.

Manchester council was the local authority making the most revenue from bus lane fines, with an eye-watering £3.7million in revenue.

    Meaningless comparison(?)

If only there was a simple way for the drivers to avoid being fined.
