@Dave: this is a good thread about the “LTNs cause delays to fire brigade” claims from London.

TL;DR - looks like they haven’t caused many delays and even where they have it is a tiny proportion of delays due to traffic.

Here’s a picture of the fire engines parked in the road:

There are no bollards at nursery, but they still parked in the road, interesting. Spaces for People meant we could still cycle past safely without getting tangled in the snarl of traffic.

Nursery on fire? Maybe fire engine would have struggled up the hill?

I think it might be a total loss, if the turntable is still pouring water on after 90 minutes :(

Looks like the biggest obstruction to the firefighters was the (telegraph?) cable attached to the pole obstructing the cherrypicker.

Ban landlines now, said no-one ever...

BBC News article. Building looks like a write off (sorry Dave).

It is quite odd how the fire engines are parked (see last photo on BBC link).

Presumably they weren’t allowing bikes or pedestrians through?

They've parked out from the edge to allow themselves space to work, and to block the road to rubbernecking drivers.

I expect the Simon Snorkel needs to be some distance back from stone walls, etc. to avoid getting restricted by them

So, in part another "criticise a scheme before it is finished" story, but on the other side: why not install the whole thing in one go (planters plus signage)?

The "let's not bother doing nice things" comment sums up a good chunk of "the discourse" at the moment, I think.

If you're upset about children growing up with low respect for their community and surroundings, doing even less for the next generation is probably not the answer.

    Probably best not read them.

"We have them in Musselburgh, about dozen or s. Stops people parking, don’t see the purpose."

    Umm...

Honestly what a load of crap, there has been gridlock on the Drumbrae well before these lanes went in!

Some of the “you don’t live in East Craigs, you don’t get a say” crowd were complaining about the extended pavements on St John’s Road, claiming (falsely) that they aren’t being used. Seems they are happy to comment about places that they don’t live.

I had a quick skim at their survey results.

30% of respondents claim to be cyclists. That’s quite at odds with their claims that cyclists are a tiny minority.

Also that the majority of drivers in this quiet, currently low-traffic neighbourhood say that there is too much traffic on arterial roads. Will they join the dots?

    “Will they join the dots?”

    They just think ‘different dots’.

Obviously most of the traffic on arterial roads isn’t from EC. They are consistently saying that EC residents have the RIGHT to drive/park when/where they want, no one else SHOULD be allowed in EC and no one else should have similar rights!...

    Ultra NIMBYS really.

More bollard protected lanes have been appearing on the Slateford Road. The newest section is just after the right turn out of Ashley Terrace, and I wonder how long the first wand in the row will survive...

I went up and down the Comiston Road lanes yesterday. There was a van half in the lane and half on the pavement on the way up - admittedly one could go round it without too much hassle as there are no wands at that spot.

When did the Comiston Road wands go in? I ask because I have set my fastest times on the two downhill segments there in the last few times I've been down - even though I will claim that I am descending cautiously, it would appear I'm going slightly faster!

"no one else SHOULD be allowed in EC"

The objection I've seen isn't that no one else SHOULD drive through EC, but that no one else DOES. Brief videos of an empty Craigs Road, etc.

Of course, these arguments were accompanied by claims that the residents of Bughtlin absolutely depend on being able to drive through East Craigs, and that they've been asking for improved traffic calming on Craigs Road for years.

When did the Comiston Road wands go in?

Mid-September, I think. Maybe wasn't actually finished until early October.

A fair few of the Comiston Road and Pentland Terrace wands are now AWOL.

@Stickman - quite funny that the market researchers emphasise a "robust methodology", when their questions include beauties like:

How would those in your household regularly travel for the following purposes:

    Work commute
    School drop-off
    Exercise/leisure
    Other journeys

Answers could be foot, bike, car, bus, tram/train, taxi or mobility scooter.

However, the "Sample overview" in the survey report uses the headings cycle, drive, don't drive, don't cycle, walk/mobility without any breakdown by trip purpose. The answers to this question simply cannot support such an "analysis", that is before you consider answers are for a household rather than an individual. The same issue is repeated throughout the report, with the addition of a category "Use public transport".

The survey and analysis are embarrassingly bad, although nice to see that Get Edinburgh Moving have been fleeced.

Nothing very surprising in those results - if you ask a group of anyone about problems they're more likely to highlight the things that are a problem for them, rather than the problems they contribute to.

Survey a group with 85% smokers and you'll conclude that lack of places to smoke is a bigger problem than pubs/offices filled with smoke.

There is something interesting in there actually, something I hadn't seen previously - breakdown of respondents by road/area:

    BARNTONGATE 103
    BUGHTLIN 405
    CRAIGS ROAD 203
    CRAIGMOUNT NORTH 220
    CRAIGMOUNT/STUARTS 223
    CRAIGS/ N GYLE ROAD/ GLASGOW ROAD 116
    NORTH GYLE 150

I'm not all that familiar with the area but looking at the map, Barntongate, Bughtlin, Craigmount North and Craigmount/Stuarts are LTNs or very close to LTNs (cul-de-sacs, etc). Even parts of North Gyle are effectively an LTN (North Gyle Road, Craigs Avenue). That means 1154-1304 of the 1420 respondents to this "we don't support LTNs" survey already live in LTNs.

There is also a significant jump in support (6-7% vs 22%) in the category which includes North Gyle Road (definitely not an LTN), but it is inexplicably lumped in with Craigs Road and Glasgow Road so it is hard to draw conclusions.

EDIT: Craigs Road is its own category, I suspect "CRAIGS" in the "N GYLE ROAD" category refers to Craigs Gardens/Avenue/Crescent which makes more sense as a category, but also means some of that category is effectively an LTN too.

I found the street breakdown in the appendix. 61% live on cul-de-sacs, 19% on LTNish streets. It seems bizarre to do a survey about through traffic and not give any breakdown by street or exposure to through traffic.

In the N Gyle Road group, for example, only 36% of respondents live on the two main problem roads. If the entire "22% support LTN" comes from that subset then it's a significant level of support but there is no way to tell.

It's also completely self selected so hey ho.

EDIT: sorry for the multiposting/spam - this survey, despite its weaknesses, is frustratingly close to answering questions I've for the last 5-10 years. Namely, would people sacrifice their own car access to address through traffic volume/speed? How many people see residential through traffic as a big enough problem they'd sacrifice their own access to someone else's benefit?

Railings now removed at the Broughton Street / Bellevue roundabout. Changes the look of it quite a lot and the changes will hopefully slow traffic.

Wow - great news! This (and, generally, the existence of that roundabout) used to annoy me every day on my old commute. Almost justifies a special visit.
