Parking bays like disabled bays/loading bays can't be created via a TTRO hence no explicit signage or road markings. Presumably some advisory yellow signs could be created but adds cost.

@Frenchy: That also might be why they're adjacent to the kerb, to make it easier for folk to get out directly onto the pavement.
Yup, it all makes a lot more sense now.

that picture?

You mean the one that looks like it was taken using a mobile phone from a car in a queue of traffic, probably from the driver's seat because otherwise the view in the mirror would have been at the wrong angle, thus appearing to be prima facie evidence of offence having been committed?

As a cyclist and a driver, I think the Spaces for People barriers at the bridge are so dangerous. It’s such a congested area.”
If all the "cyclists and drivers" the chip wrapper seems to find actually used their bikes there would be no need for the bike lanes!

I guess the EEN didn’t get the memo about road collisions guidance & not using photos taken from the driver’s seat then?

@steveo I had that discussion with Mrs Garto the other day, Not a cyclist an EEN commentator. In related news watched a fellow squeeze his work van between the planter and the kerb at the top of Currie today. He got the hard look. The planter behind has also been shifted by drivers to allow progress

The one outside Carricknowe school ends up with cars parked end on to it. Effectively getting three spaces across the road. I'm sure these are not all the same people whining about fire engines not being able to get past...

Does anyone know why the orange wands on the George IV Bridge corridor haven't been replaced with lane defenders? Seems odd since every other scheme has had them replaced. They would do a much better job at stopping cars/vans driving into the cycle lane.

Fairly random planter appeared in a parking space SMPS Annex on Canaan Lane/Woodburn Terrace today. It's doing no good at all on that corner that I can see, it just blocks drivers nightlines to the crossing. There is a worrying trend for dumped planters at the moment.

They are weirdly tall. You would still not be able to drive through one that was half the height (or lift it)
Posted 3 years ago # -
The local facebook groups are really going berserk over the planters. For the council's sake I'm glad the elections aren't until next year.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Nice to see blatant concern trolling from Cllr McLellan there.
What with him and Webber the local Tories are really going full on Trumpian.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Presumably at least as many as have been hurt on and around tram tracks.
Posted 3 years ago # -
@pringlis, That junctions seems to have been redone since google streetview last updated. The planter looks like it is there to reduce the corner radius of the junction.
Posted 3 years ago # -
@acsimpson: it's an odd one - they removed the existing pavement build out there to allow the heavy plant machinery to get into the building site for the new school. Seems strange to add the planter to reduce it again rather than just rebuilding the pavement!
What Canaan Lane there really needs is a planter in the middle of the road to stop through traffic but the chaos it'd cause until people realise it's not a through road would be pretty rough at pickup/dropoff time. I have a meeting with the council and the parent council in a couple of weeks to discuss options. The existing Spaces for People measures
aren't workingon Canaan Lane westbound aren't effective, more needs done.Posted 3 years ago # -
Just to be clear, pringlis is referring to the Western end of Canaan Lane, which in theory is closed to through-traffic, but there are no physical measures (presumably because of the construction of the new school).
The new modal filter at the Eastern end of Canaan Ln, forming part of the Greenbank-Meadows Quiet Route, is working fine.
(Also, can we not have generalisations about "Spaces for People measures not working", because this plays straight into the hands of people who want them all ripped out, like the EEN / McLellan)

Posted edited for clarity, thanks for the prompt @neddie.

Turns out the reason that planter looks so randomly placed is that they completely missed the marked out space on the ground where it was meant to go, which would mean it blocks that corner a little more effectively. Presumably someone will be back to rectify...
Posted 3 years ago # -
A planter is quicker than rebuilding the pavement. Odd that they missed the mark.
Posted 3 years ago # -
Maybe they hit the mark but guerilla drivers shifted it like they appear to have done in Currie.

“like they appear to have done in Currie“
So that’s what 4x4s are for....

Unsurpsingly Local Councillor and cyclist against cycling prof Scottie is against planters. Apparently the planters might obscure children from drivers.
Tried vainly to convince pal I was out with last night that the planters on London Road were just to stop a rat run. But, says my pal they will just create more traffic on London Road who will then turn down Montgomery Street. Or, I say if they are rat running to EAster Road they might just stay on London Road and go down EAster Road?
Pal wants all public transport to be free. I then played the centre of Paris car free. He quite liked that. His wife declined to get on a bike, even an electric bike. Mrs Garto then joined in with I wouldn’t wear a helmet as it would mess up my hair. I then caused the sky to fall in by suggesting she could ride a bike without a helmet. Pal and pal’s wife both GPs.
Luckily we were the ONLY punters in the restaurant who had to sit outside. Everybody else managed to convert to inside the day Nicola said inside allowed. We tried too but at 5pm on that day were told fully booked inside.

The hate spewed against a simple cycle lane near us (Lanark Rd) has got me wondering if we should move away if/when we upsize. I'm just not sure I want to be part of a community with this kind of hate against cycling bubbling under the surface.

The link Stickman posted has a link to this:
http://drpetermatthews.blogspot.com/2021/04/edinburgh-council-want-poor-kids-to-die.html
which is worth a read too.
It really feels like Edinburgh Council just do not care about the safety of residents in deprived neighbourhoods. Because our houses are worth less, so are our lives. ... I know a lot of this is down to the active, able communities in these [middle class] neighbourhoods campaigning for improvements. But it is also down to officers and councillors just not caring, or thinking, about deprived neighbourhoods.

Where would you go? I think this kind of echo chamber social media nonsense could be easily incited anywhere in the UK. To paraphrase Mr Pratchett the IQ of the population is the IQ of its most stupid member divided by the total population
