According to local facebook the spaces for people are now pointless because you need waders to walk in them.

Of course the same logic doesn't apply to the roads and the cars which stalled while trying to navigate flooded roads are the council's fault.

Anyone saying its blocked gullies is missing elephant in the room!!!! We have 10 years to really deal with climate change we need to move faster. Arguing over parking spaces and SFP is fiddling whilst Rome burns... We need to be blunter with people..

I think that link should contain a health warning. Also west side plaza needs a warning for the three visits of this phenomena.

I know there has been a large rainfall but surely the city council knows that might happen, so instead of spending millions on ridiculous cycle lanes for Spaces for People, spend money on the infrastructure of the city. What are the council doing for us? Where are they?”

I've seen flooding in that area of Canonmills before last year. It is at the bottom a long hill and right next to the Water of Leith.

I've no idea if the drainage is adequate or not but I don't think I've ever seen rain that heavy last for 25 minutes.

Another business to avoid in future.

Interesting comments from the owner of Napier Bathrooms.

Does make me wonder whether I would be able to sue the company that fitted my bathroom if I flooded my house after having all the taps blazing for 25 minutes. I mean, why would they install a system that wasn't able to cope with that?

Concrete drainage channels. It's the only way to be sure.

I suggest converting the main roads in certain high risk areas to the above drainage devices.

Stockbridge seems to be very heavily effected (by morons) so we can start there. Maybe suspend a cycle lane above it?

The stupidity of trying to blame the council / SfP schemes for flooding aside.

Until such time as the drainage infrastructure can be rebuilt to cope with extreme weather events (don't hold your breath) top tip is wherever possible, do not live and/or run a business at the foot of a very steep hill. See also buildings situated in flood plain of rivers.

Desperate stuff from a predictable source -

Having revealed last week that the register flags up the dangers of the council’s transport policies, sure enough the company has confirmed that although there is no specific assessment of the council’s temporary Spaces for People schemes, the broad “strategic road and space planning” category is classified as a high risk to the business.

    Expect more of it.

No assessment but we will make it up anyway.

“strategic road and space planning” category is classified as a high risk to the business.

McLellan is relying on casual readers not knowing how corporate risk registers work.

Wonder if he’ll be drawing attention to every single company which has Brexit at the top of its register?

I haven't seen the LB risk register. However, I would be amazed if the first page wasn't headed "Existential threat" in 28 point bold type - setting out the once in a century change in working and commuting patterns, the sustained catastrophic fall in passenger numbers and continuing reticence to use public transport caused by Covid-19. Nicely helped along by his UK colleagues who invited the Delta variant into the country.

Hopefully they have "being run as a business, rather than a public service" in there too.

Some basics - for every 4m² of non permeable pavement 1" (2.5cm) of rain will dump 1 Ton (1000 ltr) of water into the drainage system with no attenuation (lag between rainfall & surge)

With the space to get in a car parking space = 20m²

Look at the outfalls of storm drainage and they have flap valves to prevent back feeds from the rivers &c where they discharge https://www.flickr.com/photos/h52/51208469137/in/datetaken/ Of course when the tide comes in/river levels rise the flap closes, and the drain backs-up until the pressure forces water to flow past the valve. This caused the drain to 'explode' at Carron Water & derail the train.

Measures like attenuation 'ponds' parks, car parks, roads, that can be flooded with minimal consequences are a way to deal with this, especially if they can be 'grass' as 1 ha can soak up around 5,500 m³ per year. A good reason to rip out unnecessary tarmac and put in 'rain gardens'

    No room for better?

Any thoughts around that would have been defeated by Real Foods "need" for loading space (although Broughton Street Lane is right next to them), and the reality of the Greggs "put the flashers on" parking bay; the bus stop just beyond Soderberg; and the existential traffic flow need for two lanes going into the Picardy Place gyratory.

The tarmac's wide at the top section, but there are loading bays on both sides (outside The Basement on the other side).

    Quite.

Tory MP Damien Moore (Southport) had said people in his constituency felt “under attack from the vindictive policies of Labour-controlled Sefton Council” for trying to “impose a cycle network”.

    From the link above:

In reply, Rees-Mogg said: “I hear gossip that (Moore) is actually working in collaboration, and whisper it quietly, with the Liberal Democrats in his area against these schemes, which I think shows how completely lunatic they must be to have created an alliance between him and the Yellow Peril.”

Tories uniting with Lib Dems to oppose cycling infrastructure? Where else have we seen that recently?

For example, by delivering a fivefold increase in protected cycling lanes, we’re helping make it easier for Londoners to get out of their cars and exchange four wheels for two.

Edinburgh's own Anna Holligan reports from her adopted home in The Netherlands...

Tips from the Netherlands on how to build a nation of cyclists

As countries face pressure to reduce their carbon footprint, many climate experts recommend the promotion of cycling as an easy way to cut emissions. But every country will face very different challenges in making this a reality. What can they learn from the Netherlands? BBC Netherlands correspondent Anna Holligan is on the cycle path to share some tips from the Dutch Cycling Embassy.

Climate change: Wildfires raging in North America show why Edinburgh's new cycle lanes are important – Steve Cardownie

The news coverage throughout the world’s media on climate change and its devastating effect on North America as wildfires ravage huge swathes of land, once more reminds of the need to take affirmative action before it’s too late.
