Bikes are literally banned from that road and there is no Spaces for People infrastructure on the WAR or anywhere near the Lothian Road end.

I took her logic to be that 'everyone' was 'having' to use the WAR because SfP measures on 'all' the other roads meant they were too congested and people were looking to rat run elsewhere.

Lot of roadworks in Edinburgh just now. Given the volume of traffic allowed into Edinburgh when roadworks are around they cause tailbacks. The idea that this is anything to do with SFP is purely Weberian.

If conditions are such that people are avoiding public transport because of C19 fears then that means the justification for SfP cycle lanes is still extant and we shouldn’t be ripping them out.

The whole "cycling community" amplifying this article. Come on! It's trashy clickbait. Don't give it the oxygen

"NO goods vehicles over 5 tonne, pedal cycles, pedestrians or animals "

Actually 1.5 tonnes - the "1" has been partially removed since at least 2008, but is clearly visibly in the other signs.

Some cars are above that limit nowadays, of course, although it's not completely clear to me whether they're also banned, or if it's only goods vehicles which have a weight limit.

    GOOD POINT

@Frenchy, WAR weight limits were mentioned here:

Roadworks on Lothian Road/Earl Grey St just now, probably affecting WAR. Of course filling potholes is A VERY GOOD THING in the Tory juju so Weber (like gembo, I prefer the Teutonic spelling in this case) pulls the usual stunt of her ilk and tries to blame an outgroup against all logic and evidence.

The City of Edinburgh Council manages 1503km of roads. At its maximum SfP measures totalled:

Cycle lanes 19,5km (39km total lane length)
    Spaces for Exercise 2.5km
Guesstimate of 10km for pavement widening and city centre measures (Cockburn St, Waverley Bridge etc)

Total: 32Km - or 2.1% of the city's roads. It will be less than that now as some measures have been removed.

I reckon most car trips in Edinburgh never pass a SfP intervention. Those that do are most likely to be passing measures that replaced parking, rather than active road lanes.

Still - says a lot about a person's mentality that, sat in a traffic jam, sees buses gliding along empty bus lanes and thinks "Get rid of those bus lanes and let the traffic run free" rather than "Maybe I should be on that bus".

@Morningsider, Tories don't do buses. They don't like to rub shoulders with the lumpenproletariat. Trains are okay because they can travel First Class. At a push, they might ride a bike instead of boarding public transport. But most will not.

@murun yes I go with that spelling as links to old Max but also in my tiny brain isn’t quite giving Sue the publicity she craves.

Following our blog on crossing points on Lanark Road we've examined how the 'Spaces for People' or 'Travelling Safely' has affected junctions on the street.

    Latest SfP/Travelling Safely Report.

Some encouraging things, including the cycle lane being kept in full on Lanark Road. I liked this part, pushing back on "just use the WoL"

Furthermore, even if the route were fully resurfaced and lit, it would still have numerous
    drawbacks:
    • In order to head into town this route still leads to the Slateford Aqueduct, which
remains a dramatic pinch-point requiring users to dismount, and is completely
    inaccessible to numerous types of people cycling, including those who use nonstandard bicycles as a mobility aid;
    • It has limited connectivity into the surrounding street network (where trip origins and
    destinations are invariably located) meaning it can be of limited use for local trips;
    • It will still lack any ‘natural surveillance’ meaning many users may still be reluctant to
utilise this route at certain times of the day and:
    • In a strategic context this route does not meet the requirements and aspirations of a
fully connected cycle network for all users.
This is not to say that the route is not a valuable part of the city’s active travel network, but
it’s usability and potential impact on journeys is naturally limited.

his quote in EEN Never mind Spaces For People, we should have Spaces For Everyone, including car drivers really means

Never mind Spaces For People, we should have Spaces For car drivers ONLY

He raises a very good point, there's just so few roads in Edinburgh that you can drive on now. Justice for cars!!!

The EEN journo must feel so proud to have written an article including quotes about "the clowncil" - surely the Pulitzer is in the bag.

Did people really used to get wiser as they got older, or was it just a folk fiction that there must be some compensation to decrepitude?

The programme also includes measures to help pedestrians, including dropped kerbs and raised crossings – where the road surface is raised to the same level as the pavement.

And less than 20 per cent of the costs will fall to the council, with other bodies funding the rest, including £80m from the Scottish Government through Sustrans.

I'm imagining the collective response of CCE to this news, far from the high-fiving the Council might expect, is a collective stroking of chins and a long, drawn out "Hmmmm, I'll believe it when I see it."

@Morningsider, indeed. Or even a sarcastic "Yeah, right!"

Because over the past five years, so much infrastructure has been delivered! We're just totes spoiled for choice, dude!

Here's a quote from some rabid SFP protester -

cause only hippy dippy people want it thats why you can force people out of cars not matter how much people want it

These people are not rationale and it's scary they are allowed to drive!

Remember this is all on line so they are normally more rabid there than face to face

Of course in a motor they are also more rabid than just chatting over a brew

People behind the wheel of a car tend to be even more rabid than they are online. Something to do with power, I should imagine.

I think the Morningside SfP measures are being removed in the next few days. So, how many businesses have they managed to kill?

It would appear that the answer is "None".

In the last few weeks alone, a new cafe has opened on the site of a former dry cleaners, a bakery has replaced a bureau de change and a coffee shop is about to open in a former travel agent. I reckon that lockdown and home working did for dry cleaners, travel agents and bureau de change rather than wider pavements. The former Maison Bleu restaurant, the closure of which the owner blamed on Brexit, is being replaced by a gourmet pizza place.

Vacant shops left in Morningside include three banks (online banking). Another dry cleaners and a tailor (lockdown/home working). A bookies (online gambling/overprovision), a funeral parlour (no idea) and a weight-loss clinic (can't imagine they encouraged clients to drive there).

I hope Councillors pay attention to this real-world evidence of the impact of parking removal on businesses in Edinburgh. Yes, there has been churn of businesses in Morningside. However, this churn was largely due to changes sweeping retail at a national, even global, level. Despite all the wailing in the EEN, I am not aware of any business claiming that SfP measures drove their business to the wall. I note that pretty much every businesses which campaigned against SfP in Morningside, or claimed it would be the end, is still trading.

Went through Corstorphine earlier - how bizarre, there was a traffic jam despite the SFP being removed!
