“Yes, there has been churn of businesses in Morningside“

Yes, and plenty more in the 10 years I lived there.

‘Sad’ loss was the fishmonger, but the truth is the replacement (Cook) makes a lot more money and employers more people.

Any change in the number of charity shops?

I gather (generally) they are finding it hard to attract volunteers post Covid. May be more people willing/needing to sell stuff on Gumtree/ebay.

Others may actually be using stuff instead of replacing/giving to charity shops.(?)

I thought they were all flooded with donations after lockdown. Had a sense they didn’t want stuff. Neighbour tried three shops in morningside/Bruntsfield none of them wanted her things (decent quality duplicates bevof a household merge). I have tonnes of kids clothes. Am mailing to the Red Cross, who send you a bag and label. Seems easier than traipsing around shops.

@chdot - no new charity shops in Morningside. All the new businesses are local, independent traders. Judging by the queues outside 12 Triangles and the thronging MoMo cafe, they seem to be doing rather well.

“no new charity shops in Morningside“

Was wondering if any had shut!

None have shut recently. Although, Easter Greens took over the former Capability Scotland unit within the last year. The transfer was very quick, I don't remember the unit being empty for long.

The only unit currently vacant on Roseburn Terrace is Ruth Davidson’s former constituency office, which somehow feels appropriate given the predictions of disaster for that stretch over the last six years.

I was down Hawes Pier today and noticed that they are making proper changes to the kerbs so that whilst car drivers can't access the High Street Westbound, they will have a turning circle so they can go back the way they've come.

I didn't realised that the one way trial was being made permanent...

Next round in the Lanark Road saga is underway as SWEM have launched a new petition in support of their “community-led design”. It’s the Roseburn Vision all over again.

Have they claimed to be big supporters of congestion charging yet or is that reserved for those who want to get Edinburgh motoring.

Is it the community around the physics professor’s house and parking space? I hope so as that would be the correct community, though sometimes the correct community eg East Craigs is not actually in the specific area. But it is still the correct community.

The council has longer-term plans to create permanent pedestrian areas in the semi-circle outside the Botanics and in the equivalent semi-circle across the road at the entrance to Inverleith Park, as well as narrowing the road and providing a crossing between the two.

A survey claimed strong support for the proposals but also noted concern about the loss of disabled parking.

Transport convener Lesley Macinnes defended the Spaces for People measures but insisted the council was listening and said adjustments to the scheme were being considered.

as they get out of their cars onto a main road with speeding traffic.

I am willing to provide the MSP with my amateur traffic consultancy services at very reasonable rates to help solve this. Reckon we could come up with something in as few as 30 hours...

Main points to go to next week’s Transport Committee:

    - allowing “loading” in the Comiston Road protected cycle lane.

    - reopening Braid Road in both directions, with a modal filter north of the junction with Braidburn Terrace.

    They just can't help themselves

It's either death by a thousand cuts or the Tories skulking in the background with the guillotine

She added that some parents had become abusive after being told by staff to respect the parking restrictions, which are in place under Travelling Safely measures. The school has now forwarded details of reports by local residents, including photos, to the Police.

Tories to allow car drivers to park where they like outside schools?

The council’s transport committee is being recommended to open Braid Road in both directions as far as the junction with Braidburn Terrace, but close it north of there to all except cycles.

But in a survey of residents, the most popular option – by a huge majority – was to reopen the road fully in both directions.

A stupid blunder by the council to even think of holding a referendum. What did they think was going to happen?

There are powerful anti-LTN interests at work with dark-money funding and it would be incredibly easy for them to employ people to forge multiple submissions and manipulate the result.

Posts were going around Facebook asking non-locals to fake the postcode and so on.

    From the council paper:

"Sustrans have agreed the carryover of unspent funds from the 2020/21 funding allocation can be used to fund activities and services required to either remove, retain or modify existing schemes in 2021/22."

Why should Sustrans pay to remove schemes? If councils want to surrender to the gammon, why should active travel funding pay for it?

Maybe they're required to commit to funding any possible outcome of an ETRO to fund them at all, and it's technically possible that an ETRO could be so bad that removing it is justified.

Not that it won't be used to justify caving in to gammons, of course, but still.

The SfP funding included an amount for the removal of the schemes right from the beginning.

Congratulations to those businesses in Morningside and Bruntsfield who campaigned against the Spaces for People measures - You obviously didn't want my business so I had already taken it elsewhere.

I've now experienced the space as both a pedestrian and cyclist with the measures now removed. For openness I've also experienced it as a driver.

What a difference! What did appear to be vibrant and person focussed space that was attractive to be in and encouraged browsing / purchasing is gone.

Thanks to your vociferous campaigning, there is now basically one business, a restaurant that I will frequent out of choice. Everything else I will either get online or will make a "trip of it" in my car and visit places like Peebles, North Berwick or Bridge of Allan (to name but three) instead.

    Well done!

GREAT bit of evidence why parking is ‘needed’ on Lanark Rd.

The good news is that KEM/GEM/SWEM are appearing at the Transport committee tomorrow to once again explain that Sustrans have taken over the council/Holyrood/Westminster and that anything other than total subservience to the private car is anti-democratic.

To SWEM and politicians everywhere -

The world needs much more cycling if we are to combat climate change. Without quicker and more determined action by governments worldwide to cut transport carbon emissions, we will be dooming present and future generations to a world that is more hostile and much less inhabitable.

Nothing in the deputations from them, unless they manage to submit a late deputation. Perhaps the Evil Cycling Lobby have knocked the wind out of their sails?
