It's quite possible that the work is complete and that's all we're getting. Why cone it off twice, once for paint and tarmac then again for wands?

I was feeling q downbeat abt these works - 3 or 4 peripheral road closures. But having read the council page listing the plans to be done by 15th and the fact they are doing just 5-day consulting on them, I'm warming. Then I read them asking for feedback. I'm normally a bit cynical about that. But their page explains it is actually having real effects in this one. I think thye recognise it has sometimes been a bit of a paper exercise. I see they now plan an uphill segregation for Mound, which I think I asked them for in previous feedback, the uphillness particularly, so I'm feeling q upbeat on this topic now!

Although I realise they have to concentrate on the higher footfall areas I don't think I will ever comprehend why they closed Cammo Walk without providing any safe means for people to cross Maybury Road to access it.

Every time I go to Cammo with the kids at the moment I hope to see a simpler way across Maybury. I have hope that they will put a crossing in but it still terrifies me.

@ac when I tried with the previous coincil administration I was told it didn't have a high enough PV2 calc to be prioritised.

Given there has been a massive increase in pedestrians (say 10 fold) then it would undoubtably now score high enough even with the reduction in vehicles.

The problem is that it will be waiting due the junction redesign linked to the house building.

    You can't win quickly.

Update on the Spaces for People programme for consideration by the Council next week.

It all sounds good - but it is hard to visualise the end result. It isn't clear that there will be a coherent network, although there might be. Also, there is no mention of tackling the real cycling black holes - particularly the various roundabouts that pose the biggest threat/deterrent to cyclists.

Engagement is also underway to move signage (e.g. for Council projects, public utilities and construction projects) from the footway to the carriageway to improve conditions of physical distancing for pedestrians.

Any chance the citizens could be deputised to assist with this process on an ad-hoc basis?

    Self-deputisation might work...

Though of course whether things are improved by moving signage onto road is another matter.

As if by magic, the cycle lanes appeared. Are these wands free-standing or are they attached to the road; if so, how securely?

The base of the cyclinders from pics above look like defiance bases which say 'Weighted base prevents movement'. Other smaller bases can be supplied with anchor-bolts or adhesive pads to secure to the ground, probably for longer term use with more time to install.

Southbound they are glued down. Northbound they are placed - these are older wands which are due for replacement shortly.

Old Dalkeith Road - The Verdict

It's not bad but it's not good either.

    1) You approach it by the Cameron Toll gyratory
    2) Southbound lanes narrow and incomplete
    3) Protection vanishes at junctions
    4) Exit into RIE utterly substandard

    5) Northbound protection patchy.
    6) The scheme occupies the green lane north of Walter Scott. Buses forced to mingle with the cars?
    7) Protection vanishes to allow traffic to undertake right-turners into the dump

So good, all hail and congrats but jeezo do better please.

I took a turn along ye Olde Dalkeith Turnpike at lunchtime today, for to see whatte may be whatte, but I was a bit underwhelmed. I was going north, heading for Cameron Toll, and I was in the torpedo anyway so not mega desperate to use the infra. I thought it was a bit narrow, to be honest. They've repainted sections of the cycle lane once past the RIE, but the wands are on the white dotted line, so dynamically speaking the lane is narrower than before.

The southbound bike lane was busy though, heading up the big hill. People were using it for walking, jogging and cycling.

I had blasted past most of it because I didn't want to risk the torpedo's bodywork, but did use it on point of principle once past the tip and onto the bus lane – most of which is now bike lane. I got slightly confused at the end though, because I was heading for Lady Road and town, so jinked through a suitable gap in the wands to get into lane.

Oh, and I counted three wand casualties, which must be some sort of record for a facility that'd been open for maybe 12 hours.

@Arellcat - well what do you expect? Wands are well known for their lack of situational awareness...

On Crewe Rd, a few sections next to the kerb on the northbound side were resurfaced on Thursday. As of 2pm today, nothing else. No paint, no wands, no signs, no cones, nothing.

Plans for North Bridge: http://www.ntbcc.org.uk/here2/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/TDD-637129-04-North-Bridge.pdf - Includes closing part of the High St between North Bridge and Cockburn St. Cockburn St will also have parking removed but it appears to remain open. If so, I assume the pedestrian zone would have to be suspended to allow access.

I tweeted a couple of videos of the game of frogger required to access the top of Cammo Walk. Scary stuff.

I walked past the ODR lanes yesterday afternoon. One of the northbound wands was already free of its mooring and on the pavement. I did find them handy as a ped to be able to nip off the kerb to overtake slow walkers at a decent distance tho.

That Wav Bridge plan shows sign as saying "road closed except for taxis and loading", plus a note abt moving planters from pavement to cycleway, and moving cycle hire point away towards P st. Cycling not to be allowed on Wav bridge?

@gkgk - the plans also say "leave space for cycles to exit", which suggests cycling is allowed.
