I was disappointed by that response initially, but to be fair (and I always tend to forget this) Almond ward (Cllr Lang's and my area) doesn't include a huge amount of the city and extends quite far west, so it's good that he is thinking about the whole geographical reach - he should, as a Councillor for the whole ward. I did ask him a follow-up question that was more specific about Queensferry Road and the area surrounding the Royal High School - hoping he might come back to me on that when he's back at work.

I genuinely didn't ask my original question to him as a Gotcha - I realised that I had seen plenty of requests from him for people to share their views to him via Facebook and email etc, but that I didn't know what he thought about the measures. So...

    Niall,

Apologies for jumping on your thread, which I thought had a constructive tone and off to a good start.

I've had a follow up email with Kevin (& separately Hal) so there has been a better sharing of thoughts than twitter allows.

B8090 is in W Lothian after the motorway bridge, so Cllr Lang’s writ doesn’t run there

Would have thought Burnshot Rd was a more pressing issue...

The lane on the A56 near Sale was part of a seven-mile stretch of new cycle paths between Manchester city centre and Altrincham, but the lanes have now been scaled back to Sale town centre.

One driver claimed it took him an hour to drive two miles on the A56 because of the lane.

Found one of the Old Dalkeith Road wands deep in the undergrowth of Craigmillar Castle Park on the way home from a run to the Seat. About 300m from where it belonged. I took it back to its proper place and scrubbed my paws.

Saying you are angry about a completely inaccurate story is “whipping up hate” and “a dark path” according to the EEN editor. Slight loss of perspective I think.

“ Hands up. We all make mistakes. Our readers know we quickly acknowledge ours, apologise and set the record straight.
It is troubling when political leaders respond by setting out to whip up anger against the media. This is a dark path.”

One of the things the internut has done is to make journalists very angry. People talking back to them and finding things out for themselves.

Slightly frustrating to have to add another whole comment to make a suggestion to improve someone elses comment. However hopefully they review all along similar themes in the same area.

    There are two things here

No explanation of how such a significant mistake was possible - no fact-checking process?

The characterising of that justifiable tweet as ‘whipping up anger against the media’

    Disappointing

@IWRATS, "One of the things the internut has done is to make journalists very angry. People talking back to them and finding things out for themselves."

Indeed! Saw a similar comment from a well-sent Herald columnist some months ago.

Traditional media have got used to being able to put ludicrous or contentious claims and opinions out there with little comeback. They try doing this on the interwebs and, surprise surprise it doesn't work! Not used to having to defend their point of view, clearly...

Has anyone seen the work going on around Chambers Street and Forrest Road? Saw a picture on Twitter yesterday that suggested Orcas were going in opposite Greyfriars. Are those the same type that were tried on Leith Walk, but were taken out because they didn’t protect the bike lane, were broken and uprooted by cars and were a trip hazard for pedestrians?

Took a walk along Forrest Road around lunch time today. Had to laugh as drivers were actually parking in the cycle lane as the guys were lining the road and installing the orcas. Plus a steady stream of cars driving through the bus gate at the east end of Princes Street.

    There’s a surprise.

    Does it have a camera?

There are orcas on Forrest Road? I was up there an hour ago and all I could see was no parking cones, at the kerbside...

@Kim - yes. A few installed along the edge of the current cycle lane near Greggs/Shelter etc. with more to come (if the parked cars ever move). I think CycleAlex posted plans on this thread a few days ago. Looks like most of the "facility" will be a painted mandatory cycle lane though, judging from the mark-up on the road.

Cycled along Forrest Road today. The kerb/wand protected lane heading north is roughly 10m long. The rest is paint. The southbound segregated section by the National Museum doesn't look like it would be any use to a cyclist heading for the Meadows - as it effectively traps you in the wrong lane.

@morningsider - yup I cycled the southbound section the first day but I always go in the right hand lane as I'm heading for the meadows. Actually worse than nothing in some regards and a very odd choice of placement as I got beeped for not using it (despite going right). I don't want to be critical but it seems quite odd

Just tried the Forrest Rd lane today. Ok as far as it goes (not very far), but there's a design flaw for cyclists turning right from Bristo Place - the blocks between the wands prevent you entering the lane unless you cross the entire lane immediately, in front of Lauriston Place traffic. You can only safely get onto it when turning left from Lauriston Pl. Maybe a couple of those blocks should be removed or shortened to make some bike-size gaps.
Pleased to see the terrible potholes and patches on G4 Br have been resurfaced though. A great improvement. Also the Mound uphill currently closed to all traffic incl. bikes - looks like resurfacing there too.

I was disappointed that Forrest Rd southbound wands stopped right before the plate shop corner, which is a point where vehicles cut the corner and put us in jeopardy. I agree they leave you struggling to get into RH lane.

I also thought the low (black) rubber kerbs will cause people to fall into cars' paths if they contact the kerbs while attempting to exit between wands to overtake a slower bike.

If the Mound gets kerbs, it'll be single file, no overtaking, at speed of slowest cyclist. Maybe they'll make the Mound uphill wider.

@gkgk The initial plans (may have changed) for the Mound was a widened 2m segregated lane: http://www.spokes.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2020/06/TDD-637129-1200-10-The-Mound.pdf

Mr fimm went up part of the Dalkeith Road lane today - he reports that a group of wands have been damaged, he assumes by something large being driven into them, leaving only the feet of the wands still attached to the road.

His other comment was that the lane is getting surface rubbish in it that would normally be moved on by car wheels.
