I won't know until I try it but I think my instinct would be to ride round the outside of that arrangement with the motor cars or on the cobble strip if they're stationary.

Overtaking buses on a lengthy cobbled section of road is PRECISELY the problem we as bicyclists had on Princes Street in the earliest days of the trams. 'Edinburgh Streetscape' or something.

I'm not sure why Living Streets has got so worked up about the whole thing, when there are plenty of other examples in Edinburgh of cycle tracks intersecting pedestrian routes. MMW from George Square to PY springs to mind; almost every Toucan crossing bordering the Meadows; the entirety of the NEPN.

And how does one get to the tram stop on Shandwick Place without crossing two lanes of road? Ah, you have to use a special crossing thing. And the tram stop has a shelter and everything.

It clearly isn't as well-implemented as it could be, but the only major failing in my mind is that the bike lane should continue at street level with similar grip to the road (rather than that slippery new surface), with some planters at the start to discourage people from cycling over what would actually then be the floating bus stop.

The island is too small and should have a bus shelter or benches.

The island could be made wider by shifting the general traffic lane and the yellow bus-stop markings into the unused cobbled "central reservation" (over the short section needed).

The added chicane for cars would help keep speeds down.

@chdot: "Please ACCEPT imperfect improvements & then work to better them"

In other words: don't let the perfect become the enemy of the good. Or "Better a diamond with a flaw than a pebble without". Or sundry other alternative formulations of the same sentiment. It's been said so often you wonder why people still don't get it...

Is Victoria St properly closed at the top end? I’d be worried that this makes cyclists using it less visible there to the apparently blind drivers Victoria Street seems to attract.

@Murun Buchstansang last time I passed, Victoria Street was fully open at the top and a little less open at the bottom, but more than open enough. If one driver decides to head up, they are usually followed by several others.

"Aligning themselves with ‘status quo’ groups is not helpful."

LS Edinburgh seem to have taken the approach "my enemy's enemy is my friend". I hope they have brought long spoons to supper...

The floating bus stop in Cllr Arthur's video doesn't look like a floating bus stop. There is nothing on the island to designate it as a bus stop. Even the sign is still on the pavement. However given that it is part of a try and modify project there's plenty time to fix it.

The Spaces for People changes outside South Morningside Deanbank building on Canaan Lane seems fairly ineffective. My wife witnessed a van driver at the weekend get out of his car, pick up the signs and put them on the ground and when I was there yesterday morning the signs were still on the ground. I put the Road Closed sign back up and let the council know. They said someone checks the school signs 2/3 times a week.

Today I was there and there was a near constant stream of through traffic, and cars stopping for drop-off, no different than usual. As with the other schemes there seems to be zero enforcement. All it'd take is for a single traffic warden to change their route for the day to sit outside the school for 20 minutes at drop off time.

Get the impression that someone had a word with LivingStreedsEd account and suggested they tone it down a bit. Most recent tweets a little more levelled.

We know that some people disagree with our position on bus stops; but some of the tweets attacking us are absurd misrepresentations. We won’t respond to them - but we *will* continue to make the case for ‘everyday walking’ wherever we can. Please join us!

They sound chastised and embarrassed. We should leave them alone for a bit?

“We should leave them alone for a bit?“

    Never touched them.

    (Not even on Twitter)

‘We’ need a mole - is this an organisational change of heart or a reassertion of rationality over an individual or cabal??

Edinburgh Council’s Spaces for People programme is causing damage to businesses, increased congestion and new danger for people getting on and off buses, writes Conservative councillor and cyclist John McLellan.

    From McLellan piece

(Not sure of this means he is ok with islands or just wouldn’t back a Tory amendment on principle!)

A perfect illustration, you might think, of the kind of attitude which led to Cllr Derek Howie quitting the SNP because he felt it didn’t do enough to support the rights of disabled people.

But no, Cllr Howie voted against halting these dodge ’em tracks even though he is blind himself. Maybe he forgot he wasn’t in the SNP any more.

Wow - that is properly nasty. Cllr Howie has just proved he is no party stooge. I shouldn't be surprised that a Tory feels happy dismissing the lived experience of a disabled person - but this is grim.

The next council election is going to be horrible. “The cycle lobby” has become a proxy for Tories to attack the council in the same way “immigrants” were used to attack the EU.

“ “The cycle lobby” has become a proxy for Tories to attack the council“

Most unfortunate, but quite pathetic really.

    HOW BIG is this lobby??

    Are it’s members all councillors?

Are any? (I don’t mean people who happen to be members of Spokes).

Simple truth is that SOME of the things Spokes has been advocating for more than 40 years (and some CCEers put a LOT of effort into supporting local schemes) have become ‘mainstream’ or at least more acceptable.

Still not clear to me how much Edinburgh Tories are chasing a dwindling demographic as a cynical ploy and how much they really believe in the natural supremacy of motor cars.

The ‘no one was consulted’ is just guff. As is ‘road closures mean more traffic past schools’.

However, once again, CEC hasn’t handled this very well.

But the idea that CEC has caved in to some sort of pressure and ‘cyclists’ have ‘won’ is delusional.

It’s unfortunate that McLellan is able to report the virulent opposition of LSE It is fortunate that LSE seems to be having a rethink.

We ALL want better infrastructure for pedestrians and people using bicycles (except perhaps Edinburgh’s Tories).

The balance of the council means they just have to convince a small number to vote for them (or not vote SNP) and they will become largest party.
