A grand idea. I'll see if they've finished on my way home from work tomorrow, and if so we can figure out a time.

    https://www.edinburghnews.scotsman.com/education/more-controversy-over-edinburgh-traffic-measures-road-closures-proposed-near-primary-school-3064101

... residents say they fear the restrictions could hamper fire engines or ambulances reaching the school in an emergency.

Transport convener Lesley Macinnes said: “The closure on Buckstone Loan East, which follows a request by the local school and was developed in liaison with the parent council, is fundamentally about improving safety for children, parents and residents. By closing the road at one end we will significantly reduce through-traffic, creating more space for walking, cycling and wheeling while physically distancing. Of course, as is the case with any Spaces for People scheme, we have maintained access for emergency services.”

We’re now at the stage of local Conservative councillors and the community council opposing requests from schools.

Well it’s a well known fact that older people don’t have children at primary school and (in many cases) their grandchildren don’t live nearby...

See community council thread, but sounds like this CC doesn’t represent the local community like it has a legal responsibility to.

We would need to know what Professor Doktor Stadradt Herr Arthur makes of this. He is councillor for Buckstone.

CC doesn’t represent the local community like it has a legal responsibility to.

According to their website, FCC hasn't had a meeting (physical or virtual) since March. One could quite easily wonder whether the Secretary is therefore even representing the views of the Community Counil, let alone the Community.

As always, the root of many of the comments relate to traffic issues further out from the school. No doubt addressing these would be “controversial” and a “war on the motorist”.

    Interesting

Presume he has raised some of these issues before...

Steps should be taken to remind Buckstone residents of the hazard parked cars and overgrown hedges (etc) pose to pedestrians and those with buggies/wheelchairs/guide dogs. This is particularly important on the arterial routes through Buckstone and the streets surrounding the school. Likewise, a reminder should be issued regarding speeding on the estate.

He is passing on a lot of local concerns to CEC. It’s disappointing (but understandable) if the council hasn’t already considered some/all of them for this proposed change.

It would also be wise to involve councillors from an early stage. Does this not happen?

"arterial routes through Buckstone"? It's a residential housing estate where all the access roads emerge on to either Braid Road or Comiston Road - so the same actual road in all but name. There are no "arterial roads" through the estate. He's talking out of his hat.

I wondered about that. More capillaries than arteries.

The catchment area for the primary is the estate and doesn’t extend west of Comiston Road. A quick look at the map shows that the longest possible walk to the school from within the catchment area is 0.7 miles.

Why does Dr Arthur feel the need to conduct his business with officials in public? He is a councillor and could simply arrange a meeting to chat things through with officials, who could directly answer his questions. He could then report the answers to residents, rather than a list of questions.

This just makes things awkward for officials, who I'm pretty sure will have considered most of the issues he raises. By publicly raising these questions before giving people a chance to answer he risks makings officials look incompetent. Not the way to get the best from people.

Also, he seems to forget that he is (part of) the Council. Part of his job is to represent the views of residents to officials - it's not some extra chore.

I'm not saying that officials shouldn't be challenged, but there are more constructive ways of doing things.

He is the chief of the Buckstonii tribe, ensconced in a hill fort on Galachlaw and not caring one fig for the wider city.

    Reminds me of this -

Lord Biffen served in the first two Thatcher governments but was sacked in 1987, when her press secretary famously described him as "semi-detached".

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/6945469.stm

    Though perhaps it’s a phrase about/by Tories(?)

Philip Hammond is a “semi-detached” member of the Government pushing his own agenda on Brexit, influential Tory Eurosceptic Jacob Rees-Mogg said.

There are no "arterial roads" through the estate. He's talking out of his hat.

There are certainly two 'main' roads through Buckstone, those being Buckstone Crescent/Drive and Buckstone Road; almost all of the other roads are accessed from them, and so they will carry more vehicles as people drive to get to the A702. Not arterial in the proper sense though, and they are, by all reasonable standards, no wider or heavier built than any of the other roads in the estate.

I got to try the pseudosegregated QBC this evening. Popped in just north of Relugas Road and popped back out just after Kittle Yards when it became obvious the unfenced sections were deathtraps, so I was safely in the normal road when I reached the by where the wands stop just south of Tesco to allow people to park right up against the wand base.

    @wingpig.

Just did that bit. Motor parked right on all the fierce paint marks outside Tesco. This will always be the case.

The interface between fenced and unfenced is pretty scary. Demands a new skill of rear and forward observation.

Brilliant photo on Twitter showing a queue of people waiting outside Toys Galore on Morningside Road, demonstrating both the need for extended pavements and that parking directly outside the shop is unnecessary.

I doubt the owner will change his view though.

    @gembo: Probably this:

    https://www.scotland.police.uk/what-s-happening/news/2020/december/four-charged-following-march-in-central-edinburgh/

Four men have been arrested and charged following an illegal march in Edinburgh from outside the Scottish Parliament to Charlotte Square on Saturday, 12 December, 2020.

The men, aged 37, 31, 53 and 31, are due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court at a later date.

Chief Inspector Murray Starkey said: “Today people marched in contravention of legislation. We would urge people to find alternative ways to protest, such as online and on social media.

“Our approach throughout the pandemic has been to engage with the public, explain the legislation and guidance, and encourage compliance, only using enforcement as a last resort.

“Our response today has been measured and appropriate."
