At the time, I asked Ash Denham, whose constituency includes the stretch of Gilmerton Road @IWRATS mentions why she voted against that amendment.

"As this amendment was to amend secondary legislation, it would be far more suited to being in secondary legislation itself, rather than having a bill provision further amend what is already an amended instrument."

This was not the reason Michael Matheson, the transport secretary, gave in the chamber when he explained why the SNP wouldn't be voting for it. He spoke instead about the need to consult the public, I think.

Ms Denham is not notoriously lavishly gifted intellectually. Not surprised she got the excuse muddled.

Seriously what is the point of all this paint?

@Frenchy - neither argument stands up to much scrutiny in the light of subsequent Brexit and Covid related legislation.

I know these are emergencies - but the Scottish Government makes much of its declaration of a climate emergency. I don't see why the legislative response to that should be any less urgent.

@Morningsider - Can you provide any specific examples of the Scottish Government using primary legislation to amend secondary legislation in response to those emergencies?

@Frenchy - the Schedules to the Coronavirus (Scotland) Act 2020, as amended, include lots of tweaks to different regulations. For example, provisions in Schedule 5 amend the Licensing (Procedure) (Scotland) Regulations 2007 to extend certain time limits.

Not huge changes, but changes none the less and made to keep regulatory systems functioning in the face of an emergency.

Slightly more significant changes can be made, such as in Schedule 4 of the Coronavirus (Scotland) (No.2) Act 2020, which amended the Non-Domestic Rates (Coronavirus Reliefs) (Scotland) Regulations 2020 to extend non-domestic rates relief to premises used for the production of newspapers.

Useless if turning right though, as many could well be if coming off the canal

The photo is heading north down towards Evans? Is it? The road is one way? So no one loses out? If it was 1861 the first Co-op (St Cuthberts) would complain the dray horse for their milk cart would not be able to eat its bag of oats out in front of the shop??

But this lane might stay after the pandemic as one lane for left and one lane for right is sufficient.

Canal would be to the west?

Apart from the building renovation on the new building next to Akva that whole area now has good surface, new traffic lights, no potholes, segregated lanes, sneaky wee back routes, nice wide pavement for those inclined to cycle on it etc. Rather good all round. Evans needs too stay open and be slightly more chilled (they are actually not too bad just slight edge) Not cheap Evans though.

So getting on to the canal there has felt a bit easier of late coming out of Grassmarket.

I think the photo is heading towards Macdonald Cycles if that still exists? Past the entrance to LBG's Port Hamilton building. I used to go that way and it could be useful. Worst thing there was the right turn into Morrison Street best done in heavy stationary traffic rather then the fluid murder-stream.

Interestingly (well, maybe for me) the cycle lane & lane defenders were added as part of the resurfacing works rather than Spaces for People. Are there any other instances of the lane defenders being added outwith SfP?

    "Macdonald Cycles".

Used to like going in there for a browse and to pick up bits and pieces. I seem to recall they used to have some handsome frames hanging up on display, showing that they were a "serious" bike shop...

MacDonalds is now a French Creperie I saw that today when I was confirming my identification of the bollards. Lot of them coming down from fire station and a Tiny wee bit once round toward# semple st, tho as murun says, if you ignore canal bit, making the right would be tricky from bollard lane

No, Macdonald's became a board game cafe, which I think is still there physically, not sure if trading, a difficult proposition in these times no doubt. The creperie is in what used to be Pronto, and was a driving school office before that

    Liberton-New Town-Restalrig-Newington-Liberton today.

Not sure that journey has materially changed since the late eighties. There were a few bits of protection but not where it was needed and you have to be hyper-vigilant when exiting the bollarded lanes.

Used the Eyre Place lane for the first time and it genuinely does just end. No hint of what you're supposed to do.

    @murun Score then 1-1?

Noughts and Crosses is next to the creperie. Been there a while but the Creperie seems new and the rainbow gate down the lane that used to run behind the Filmhouse.

Danny MacAskill has been on both roofs with his bike. When he worked in Macdonalds. And posted his first YouTube’s

Seemed to close the 7 years and 11 days ago. Time flies. Former employee Danny MacAskill still going strong.

Did we not have a thread on here some time ago, regarding the auctioning off of the remaining stock of Macdonalds Cycles? Indeed I have a feeling some folk here may have made bids...?

Correction: Danny did not 'work' in Macdonalds. He was present for sure but oversight was notoriously lax due to Mr Macdonald being a very relaxed fellow.

picture above usefully goes past my GP's clinic and one of the flu vaccine sites (except that that's on the right...

my question is, what's the current arrangement just before the picture starts? I often find it full of idling cars - apparently parents on nursery or school collection.

Citizens are finally getting the urban patios and parks promised when the cramped medieval city was extended in the 1900s

Enjoying the resurfaced sections of Gilmerton Road even though the new pedestrian crossings preclude the usual speedy if bumpy descent
Unfortunately they have created a narrow segregated cycle lane on the final section as you come to Goods corner. A good idea but they have nothing to upgrade the surface which is full of sunken drain covers and bad fissures and the narrowness of the lane means that these are hard to avoid and ignoring the lane and using the rest of the road will doubtless incur the rage of car and bus drivers ,who with some justification might be angry that they have given you a physically separated bike lane and you can’t be arsed to use it!

Agreed. I usually ride that bit on the line they put the blocks and poles on. Even with my suspended components it's a bit agricultural.

Unintuitively, most of that is actually in Southside/Newington. The boundary moved south at the last election to Double Hedges Road/Glenallan Drive.
