£10m for 5.5m is 40% of English funding, not 400%

Engerlund 2.5 times more than Scotland.

    Per head

Contrary to my recent views it would now seem that cyclists need to vote Tory???

Apparently TfL is planning with ‘temporary’ meaning 18 months.

What timescale is CEC working to?

Made a mistake in other thread thinking it was 20% but really. They're getting infinitely more aren't they? Given its new money

The 4 Inverleith Councillors have written about their ward and disappointment with Raeburn place being omitted

    https://m.facebook.com/1101082309961899/posts/3732493660154071/

No recognition of the speed that it is being done or that they welcome the initiatives in our city.

"the Edinburgh City Centre Transformation plan which was a plan developed to deal with overtourism"?

Eh? That will come as news to many.

In completely disbelief at the tweets I've just seen from the Edinburgh Conservative councillors.

They are so willfully obtuse when it comes to this. They must genuinely think their route to power is by focusing on empowering the motorist and no logic or instruction from the top of their party will stop them.

If the tory top brass in Westminster go any further supporting cyclists and pedestrians, they'll have to locally break away and become the Edinburgh Conservative and Secessionist party.

@toomanybikes at one time they would have been in a "separate" party, the so-called Progressive Party, which was formed as a kind of electoral ruse to keep Labour out of power in local councils across Scotland. Supporters and/or former candidates for the Liberals, Unionist Party and independents joined forces to preserve the status quo for nearly half a century from 1928 onwards. Particularly strong in Edinburgh.

Let us not forget the Protestant Action Society which also had councillors in Edinburgh then. (And up to the fifties?)

John Cormack who founded the PAS was a Councillor for South Leith for 30 odd years

He attacked Facists of Oswald Mosley but only because they were tolerant of Catholics.
    PAS were right wing bigots.

30,000 rioters and victims in Canaan Lane must have been a squash and a squeeze?

Esta Henry joined the PAS to get elected tot he Council and left afterwards. She was Jewish and ran an antique shop in the Luckenbooth/part of Moubray House (just up Royal Mille from John Knox houses I think) Princes Mary of Teck liked rootling in the bric a brac.

I am a wikipedia editor but it is not a position that I would abuse, nor can it really be abused except in very small ways which of course I do.

A Catholic schooled guy I know told me about them. They have been disappeared even from the memory of folks old enough to remember them. Deep shame I think.

Morningside Tory councillor Nick Cook tweeted: “This brings forward measures that local councillors have consulted on with residents over many years - and many public meetings. It isn’t without issue, but also helps ensure residents can better access and park their vehicles outside their homes.”

From a quick squint at them it would appear that, when a quick response is required, all parties want further committee approval before any actions are taken.

Twitter thread from Lib Dem Kevin Lang. He wants more consultations and to fix the potholes.

    https://twitter.com/kevin_lang/status/1260637277249814533?s=21

LibDem councillors in Edinburgh have looked carefully at these proposals. We think there is a huge amount in here to be supported, making it easier and safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

However, we’ve tabled a constructive amendment aimed at improving the plans

We think local cllrs and community councils need to be properly engaged and consulted on individual schemes. Let’s trust those who know their communities best

In most cases, cyclists will continue to travel on roads, many of which are in a terrible and dangerous condition. Let’s get a new resurfacing plan for this year signed off and implemented ASAP

We need an updated prioritisation plan for new pedestrian crossings across the city so there are more, safer crossing points for pedestrians now and in the future

the bus stop rationalisation (removal) plan snuck in at the end of the report just needs to be dumped. Creating fewer, more congested bus stops goes completely against social distancing.

We’ll be arguing strongly for these as some other changes tomorrow. We are keen to get a stronger cross-party consensus on getting improvements for active travel in Edinburgh

Was thinking last night while riding along it, that as well as tinkering with suburban streets, something like reducing the A8 to one lane each way between Gyle and Newbridge would send a good signal and help new bike commuters coming in from the West. It would negate the need to use that silly path and cross the road 2 or 3 times in 3 miles. It would also help force through motorists to use the very expensive and 'just for them' motorway between Hermiston and Newbridge, created at enormous expense rather than rat-running along the A8. I just ride in the carriageway now but I totally see why it would put people off.

Mr fimm and I were wondering why they hadn't closed the dual carriageway bit of Marine Drive nearest the Silverknowes Road junction, which is only used as a car park anyway. Surely they were not leaving space for people to park?

The programme of measures is also set to include new street furniture in the city centre to enable people to socialise safely at distance and ease the way for pavement cafes to operate once restrictions are lifted.

Apologies if this is posted elsewhere. I haven't had time to read it fully, but what I have seen has me thinking. I have to admit, I have not cycled more than 1.5 miles from my home since this started, I'm just feeling really lazy. :)

Reflections on CEC proposals for safer streets.
