I agree that the Scottish government has a lot to answer for. It's a farce that Westminster Tories are delivering a ban on new petrol and diesel cars that will take less time to implement than a single east-west cycle lane in central Edinburgh for example...

You can build hundreds of houses on greenfield with less red tape than removing one or two parking spaces in town.

I notice that the picture in the Chipwrapper article is of wands being installed on Morningside Road. These wands have now all now been removed and parking reinstated.

We all know there is only one actual objection to spaces for people schemes - "I am Driver - how dare you inconvenience me!"

No inconvenience is too small not to merit a blue in the face, bed-wetting tantrum. Move parking six-feet to the right - waah! Need to park in your own driveway - NOT FAIR! Walk 100m to a shop - BuT WhAt AboUt thE dIsABlEd! Have to drive for an extra 90 seconds - it's the end of democracy!

This is the stand they are willing to take in the face of coronavirus, climate change and the health effects of inactivity and air pollution. Educated people knowingly arguing against the greater good for their own tiny, selfish reasons. They rely on arguments that carry the weight of wet crepe paper or are simply lies (no-one will be able to park!)

Literally as I was writing this I heard that a colleague's dad has died of Covid-19. So yeah <rule 2> anyone arguing against giving the 40% of Edinburgh households without access to a car a safe way to get about the city while the advice is not to use the bus.

“These wands have now all now been removed and parking reinstated.“

    Why? (Apart from driverist objections.)

    Why? (Apart from driverist objections.)

    No other reason.

"There will be a reinstatement of 10 parking spaces on Morningside Road following the work of Cllr Cammy Day & Cllr Mandy Watt and a serious level of communication between the council and Daniel Johnson MSP & Ian Murray MP."

from an email from Daniel Johnson, following up on the Zoom meeting he hosted in October-ish.

All of those named need to be voted out. None of those named will be voted out.

So much for the CEC Coalition.

Herr Doktor Professor Arthur has already repudiated that coalition. I guess STV voting requires the candidates to be adults and we seem to have wannabe-warlord toddlers.

All more reasons why SNP Gov should visibly back the SfP measures of CEC...

As said above, either say ‘the rules are being followed’ or fix the ‘illegality’.

If councils have to bid annually for active travel funding, they can't take on staff - as they never really know what the budget might be and how much work there will be to do. So instead they have to pay far more to consultants for ad hoc work. The Scottish Government could easily sort this - just award ring-fenced active travel funds to each council rather than going via Sustrans. This would provide the certainty required. If a central hub of expertise is needed than suitable staff could be employed directly by Transport Scotland.

Would save cash in consultants fees and putting together bids for Sustrans funding.

Thing that strikes me about all the "heat, light and noise" about introducing these measures is that they are trying to replicate things that work successfully in other countries?

Why is it apparently such an issue in Edinburgh / Scotland?

Going to get a bus in Copenhagen, with bikes going past between me and the road where the bus was, there was no issue getting on. Cyclists were aware of pedestrians and buses and made allowances for people neeing to get on the bus.

Starting to wonder if we are just plain stupid here that we can't seem to cope with this or that a road layout is foot way, cycle way, road carriage way, road carriage way, cycle way, foot way?

Thinking about this, it is certainly bold of the Tories to mention consultancy fees. Just six, year-long Brexit consultancy contracts cost £180,000,000.

The Public Accounts Committee has been scathing about the use of consultants in Brexit preparations, stating in a report:

Departments have made extensive use of consultancy firms in support of their preparations for Brexit, spending at least £97 million by April 2019. Departments have been overly secretive about what the consultants are doing, as they have been before in providing information on other aspects of the Brexit preparations. When departments have published information on consultancy work, usually later than they should have, they have failed to meet the government’s own transparency standards. Departments took too long to publish information on the contracts being let, and some contracts were over-zealously redacted before publication

    But, you know, cyclists...

Commuters are risking their health on a daily basis because of crowded buses on a busy Edinburgh route, it was claimed today.

This was one of the main justifications for SfP bike lanes. Will any opponents acknowledge this?

Yes the solution will turn out to be parking in Princes Street gardens, castle esplanade, Holyrood park and the Meadows.

No evidence yesterday that I saw, wasn't out today. Perhaps the dodgy survey has the council running scared?

Haven't seen anything on the Greenbank to Meadows Quiet Route yet either despite being approved back in November.

From CEC: "A letter will be sent to residents along the route with a link to the plans which will be added to the Council website. A copy of the letter will be sent to you later this week in advance of the letter being sent to residents."

Hopefully implementation starts in the next week or two.

She claimed traffic on Cluny Drive had increased ten-fold.

I’m sure the people on Hermitage Drive are relieved (in two senses).

Sounds like an argument for closing more roads...
