“The volume of traffic returning to Braid Road would likely be greater than the corresponding decrease in traffic on Comiston Road.

Our nursery which is at the top of lanark road sent out a very tempered and well meaning letter to us all asking for a "proper consultation" on Lanark Road changes.

They've been speaking to the "South West Edinburgh In Motion" group that Weber (not Joanna Cherry sorry they were asking people to email her and I got it in my head) is leading on and their main point is: "I do not wish to come across as anti-cyclist or pro-car as this is not the case. My biggest concern is the safe use of nursery by everyone that attends or visits nursery."

There are 9 car parking spaces designated outside the nursery but they are floating which is why they're concerned.

As ever it comes down to the fact that yes if EVERYONE travels by car then EVERYONE will be safer. I'm not denying that. However there seems to be a significant more concern for people arriving by car than people travelling by any other means. Let's also ignore that the people travelling to and from nursery endanger everyone else and pump out CO2.

I do unfortunately see this as the prevailing mindset in the south-west Edinburgh. Too many people listening to the "won't someone please think of the children" brigade who for the most part are more concerned about the impact on their ability to park at the end of their own driveway (massive generalisation but I'm pretty demotivated and angry about all this stuff now).

Very unlikely. She has much bigger fish to fry. No trace on her Twitter.

That's very frustrating ARobComp, I feel for you.

if EVERYONE travels by car then EVERYONE will be safer

Maybe it's best to keep things simple for "them", but I don't even agree with this.

Everyone that drives has to get out and walk eventually. People, and particularly children, get run over in car parks all the time. And with everyone driving, there would be significant walking distances from "your" parking spot. Not to mention road crashes.

Add on that the "dangers" caused by inactivity, obesity, diabetes, etc...

Lot of use of parking at top of Lanark road. Was getting dangerous as no way to get into inside lane. Bit was tower nursery but mostly improvised park and ride. Bizarrely started after the surface was improved, the increased parking

@IWRATS: that’s what I thought. Perhaps @ARobComp meant Cllr Webber.

@Stickman @IWRATS - Sorry you are correct. I meant Weber, however they have stated that Cherry is the person who is interested in hearing more from constituents about the plans. Got the wrong name in my head.

@Neddie - that was sort of my point in some ways, while they're in the car they're safer. People don't get hurt (that often) in cars (when driving slowly around the city) but the increase in risk by increasing number of cars far outweighs those benefits. It was a throwaway comment rather than a real argument.

Every on-street car parking space is "floating". It's just that pedestrians are unlikely to damage a car door swung carelessly over a pavement.

The project follows initiatives such as the trial Low Traffic Neighbourhoods and School Streets scheme, with both councils committed to addressing issues that affect the environment and health of their communities with the resources it has available.

@neddie: The council "would like" the QR to be implemented *before* Braid Rd is reopened.

I think that could be a huge mistake unless they re-instate the modal filters that were originally planned for the QR south of Cluny Gardens as part of the delivery of the QR (per blackfordsaferoutes' tweet of 22nd Jan). If not then Braid Road will just return to its previous role as a rat-run for people who want to avoid the two sets of lights at Greenbank (which I still believe are a contributory factor in the congestion along Comiston Road - but obviously secondary to the issue of there being just too many motor vehicles on that corridor).

Spotted roadworks on Lanark Road this morning, north of the Gillespie Road traffic lights. Unclear whether it was the start of the SfP work or something else.

A consultation exercise “to seek views on the retention or adaptation of appropriate measures” is soon to be embarked upon.

Given the controversy that some of the measures have generated so far, it should make things interesting but it will be up to the public whether or not sufficient numbers respond to make the whole exercise worthwhile.

Blocking off part of Braid Hills Drive and Road – a country route between Greenbank and Liberton – was included in several options drawn up under Spaces for People plans to make more room for cyclists and pedestrians in the area.

But when Colinton/Fairmilehehad Labour councillor posted the plans on Facebook, members of the public branded the proposals "ridiculous" and said they sounded like an April Fool.

And now the council has said the road will remain open and tomorrow’s transport committee will be asked to approve the installation of a new two-way segregated cycle lane.

Braid Hills Road is right in the city. It's not the 'country'. It's the direct corridor between the south-east and the south west.

Yep. Think of it more like a road through a city park.

A bit like the one in Regents Park, London, so plagued with rat-runners.

Cllr Arthur: “The public aren’t being given options for SfP plans”

Council: “Here are some options for Braid Hills Road”

Public: “One of those options is stupid”

Council: “OK, we’ll remove it from the list”

    Cllr Arthur “ ... “

To be fair I think the Dogging Community (South Edinburgh In Rhythmic Backseat Motion) actually quite like a bit of coming and going to add spice to their activities.

    Perhaps they could be recruited?

I will summarise somewhat for you gembo - the cycling surgeon Prof Chris Oliver thinks they are not designed well for any road user. Dave du Feu says even if bollards are causing accidents, the protection they give against motor vehicles outweighs this. Both are said to be speaking for Spokes (not sure this is correct)

Thanks Murun, very helpful, so glad I did not read it.

I have PM’d you in case the wheel is on offer. The mechanic says to leave in the drop off place. I have pm’d you about that too.

Prof Oliver is a polymath with eleven degrees. He hardly needs Spokes to amplify his message.
