I'm on a local FB group where there is some Lanark Rd hysteria about having to park with the cycle lane on the inside.
One thing struck me though, in the video example the driver /could/ just park on their drive but they /prefer/ to park in the "incredibly dangerous" parking bay instead. (I don't think they were connected to the person filming, which was the boardwalk cafe guy)
So despite the outrage, we can see that given the choice of avoiding danger by just parking in your drive, people are happy enough to keep parking there. How much danger is there really?

I'm disappointed to see the boardwalk cafe guy attacking Spaces For People schemes even as far away as the Lanark Rd!
I've spent a LOT of money at boardwalk cafe over the years (since it's not cheap and I am addicted to coffee and bacon rolls).
No more. If you actively don't support my kids safety on the street, not a penny from me :(

what do they use their drive way for then? (or is this the old, it's dangerous to reverse into my driveway issue?)
Posted 3 years ago # -
@SRD Presumably these are the same individuals who insist on driving into their driveway then reversing out?
When I am king that sort of thing will be severely punished. Fingernails on blackboards, the works.
Other than the odd driveway incident (which to be fair happened just as often before they put the lanes in) I am loving the Lanark Road SfP scheme.

I suspect they're just impatient, dump the car at the side of the road instead of waiting for a gap in the traffic to reverse into their driveway.

Boardwalk cafe man lives Colinton
He has form
Strangely as many of his customers cycle
Parking in your driveway clearly an option if you have one, this should really be pointed out

I don't mind if they choose to park in a space instead of their drive, now that there's a clear cycle lane set aside for our kids.
However I don't think they can choose the road parking over their private drive and then say cycle lane should be ripped out because of DANGER.

They can, and they will say whatever it takes. Don't mistake these people for rational thinkers. It's pure emotion: the rage of entitled folk incandescent that the "clowncil" have let bloody cyclists invade their bit of road right outside their own front doors. The impertinence! The cheek of these cyclists demanding special treatment! Who do they think they are? HOW DARE THEY SOMETHING MUST BE DONE.

I went and had a look at the Silverknowes lanes. Next time I will follow the example of the other cyclists I saw and take the bus lane downhill, leaving the cycle lane for those cycling uphill.
I also found an unexpected lane on the northern half of Drumbrae. I'm not sure what it is connecting up? The southern half of Drumbrae isn't much fun to cycle, and at the northern end is the Queensferry Road, which isn't exactly 8 - 80 cycling territory...
Mr fimm read something in the Edinburgh Evening News about the Lanark Road lane not being part of the "Spaces for People" schemes - does anyone know any more?
Posted 3 years ago # -
It's definitely listed among the SfP schemes in the current "which bits do you want to keep?" consultation.

I asked about the “removing disabled parking” claim. Apparently there were no allocated disabled spaces, but this wasn’t a problem before because there were so many spaces. So I can see why disabled people are concerned. But for this to be spun as “they’ve removed disabled spaces” is a bit manipulative, as it suggests the council have removed allocated bays.
However, any time an opponent is asked how they would improve the layout they just say the whole thing should be cancelled. They just don’t want any change to the status quo.

“They just don’t want any change to the status quo”
Yep.
(Also the ‘entitled’ comment further up.)

Anyone seen videos of the SfP schemes in action posted online? Think a video along Lanark Road for example would be useful so folk can see how it is working, rather than just some pictures of half-finished ones or bits people find "controversial".

So when you're thinking about a negotiation there is a thing called "Best Alternative To Negotiated Deal" (BATNA) which is basically what happens if no deal is possible. SWEM won't negotiate, because obviously for them because ANY outcome where there is a cycle lane is not positive. SWEM have no possible concessions at this point to make in a negotiation.
For SWEM therefore the BATNA is that the cycle lane is installed with no changes, and is made permanent.
The council would approach a negotiation with a BATNA which is that if no deal is possible, the cycle lane is installed with no changes (same BATNA). However they would have a "zone of possible agreement" (ZOPA) which would give some concessions to try and keep local people happy.
The fact that the BATNA for the council is the same as that of SWEM and that there is no ZOPA overlap (because SWEM has no ZOPA) shows that SWEM have no possible desire to try and enter any sort of negotiation (I'm not for a second saying that they should enter a negotiation as in the end they don't actually represent anyone) because there is no possible flex to their position and the best alternative to negotiation is the same as their worst outcome.
So lets consider democracy. Democracy is a series of negotiations to a certain degree. A little bit of funding for the NHS here, a little bit of road building there etc. Democracy, by nature of the number of people involved involves flex.
Refusing to have any position for negotiating is not being strong, it's being unrealistic and un-democratic. SWEM are not interested in democracy despite all they say. They're interested in getting the one thing they want and therefore will do everything they can (smear council workers/conspiracy theories) to avoid entering a democratic process they know they can't win.

Chummed Mrs Garto to EICC last night for her jag (not sure what all the people are doing hanging about outside EICC? If some left in the vials at the end of thE day can you pile in? The jaggers were certainly sharing vials so there was none left at end of day and Mrs Garto’s jagger was forgetting the script at end of shift. This is reported by Mrs Garto I was in Sainsbury’s buying little tins of Gin and lemonade, don’t ask but within rules)
Anyway, anyway, Driving home about 6pm most locals had parked in their drives, maybe at the new flats opposite the football pitches on Kingsknowe a few cars. Mrs Garto pronounced the scheme to be fine except the pinch point at the Gowfie.
What drivers have to do is slow down and remain alert. Like cyclists have to do on that road everyday
Not only is this not a bad thing it is in fact a good thing. Improves your driving Be A Lert, Stay A Lert. Let’s hear it for the Lerts.

“What drivers have to do is slow down and remain alert. Like cyclists have to do on that road everyday“
This of course is part of the problem - ‘why should I have to be more careful than usual?’...
(Other aspect - ‘why should I have to slow down?’.)

Great Twitter thread looking at Lanark Road changes:

What about the golfers? Woman golfing Man golfing existing Car Parks unaffected. Parking available on Lanark Road within 150yrds (one 5 iron shot)

Parking has to be a 3 foot gimme putt from the first tee?
I once smashed a car windscreen with a wayward drive as a boy. You want to park wel” away from me

@chdot: ‘why should I have to be
morecarefulthan usual?’FTFY. Twitter, Whatsapp and Facebook don't read themselves you know.
Someone mentioned the word "entitled" a few posts back. The woman complaining about cyclists objecting to her using the mandatory cycle lane on Comiston Road to reverse in to her drive described them as "entitled". Er, yes, they are: entitled to use such a cycle lane without expecting to encounter motor vehicles on it.

"They're interested in getting the one thing they want"
Sums up the approach of many local residents when they get involved in anything political. Believe me, I've been there: Parent Council, Resident's Association, you name it it's always the same. Very few folk interested in "the common good", just their own hobby horse. If they achieve their goal, job done and they leave; if they don't, toys out the pram and they either leave or make life intolerable for those trying to "do good", "listen to a range of views", etc.
Needless to say I now leave local politics largely alone, except when pushing for my own hobby horse(s). Like they say, if you can't beat 'em, join 'em!

Heading along Lanark Road today, I noticed that the westbound cycle lane has now been extended down to the Inglis Green Road lights. (The Army still has its on-street parking though, so that's alright.)
I was quite impressed that both lanes seemed to be being respected, with no DGAF parking that I could see all the way up to the Gillespie crossroads. People seem to be behaving themselves rather better than was the case when the Comiston Road lanes first went in. And that's without any wands or defenders, just DYLs. A positive sign maybe?

Orcas getting installed this morning with the team working downhill from Gillespie Crossroads towards town.

@fimm and everyone else: please use the actual cycle lane - it's nice and wide. Please use it. Please.

Learmonth Terrace/Oxford Terrace cars-coming-at-you-from-all-angles shit show has been fixed this morning. Enjoy :-)
Segregation for QF Road coming on Monday, I'm told.

Noticed a new stretch of cycle lane along Longstone Road/Inglis Green Road, on the aqueduct-bound side. I think it started just after the ex-Longstone Inn but might have been as far back as the Murrayburn Road roundabout. It went as far as the Sainsbury's traffic lights. Lots of new DYLs, much I imagine to the chagrin of the operators of the second-hand car place (ex-Kia dealership IIRC) who had been in the habit of strewing their wares liberally along the roadside/footway.

@Harts Cyclery which lane?
Mr fimm and I will both use the Lanark Road lanes. I don't go over Drunbrae often, and was a bit surprised to find those lanes; but I used them. The Silverknowes lanes - they narrow quite a bit where the bus bypasses are. I can see potential for conflict between oncoming cyclists there.
Posted 3 years ago # -
@fimm, the SK lane, yes. It's plenty wide enough to pass at the narrowings. Please use it :-)
