    Good Afternoon

I am Steve Hampson Head of Volunteering for Walk the Walk we are the breast cancer charity behind the Edinburgh Moonwalk

We could not hold the Moonwalk if it was not for our fantastic Volunteers and Supporters and we were hoping you could help us recruit a team of keen cyclists to act as mobile marshals and incident response.

If you would like any further information please do not hesitate in contacting me

With good wishes and good health

    Steve Hampson Head of Volunteering

I like the idea of being "mobile response", particularly if I got a flashing light. I'd be happy to help out.

  5. I looked into this a couple of years ago and there seemed to be a lot of pressure, even as a support member like that, to get 'sponsorship'. Seemed odd.

Couple of friends took part last year (we took them coffee and bacon rolls down at the Porty prom at 5am) and said the bureaucracy involved was really off-putting. Things like the day after putting in the booking she realised she'd put the wrong bra size for her boyfriend (well, it's unlikely to be known off the top of the head) and called to ask if she could change it. No, they hadn't processed their booking yet, but no, it couldn't be changed, you had to take what you'd put on the form, end of discussion.

And the start area was apparently really poorly organised.

Not that it's a BAD thing, don't get me wrong, all in a good cause and all thatbut sometimes I feel big charity events seem to think they are doing you a favour by letting you take part.

I contribute to four different (I think) charities through regular donations, and do occasional one-off things (like this year's Caledonian Challenge after postponing last year).

Clearly I'm in a curmudgeonly mood today. Bad day in the office - need someone to cut me up tonight to take it out on...

like this year's Caledonian Challenge after postponing last year

I marshalled last year and it's likely I'll be doing it again next year. If I do though I'll try and wiggle out of "motivation with 1 mile to go" duties, as when you tell the tired, cold, wet, hungry, midge-harassed, shattered, dirty and desperate that they're "doing great, well done, only 1 more mile to go", they really don't seem to thank you for it :)

Having done it myself previously I took it on the chin though and concentrated on maintaining my midge defences and rationing out the pack of digestive biscuits that was our only food for 8 hours!

  8. I took part ten years ago. Only gor to the 40 odd mile mark though. Unfinished business.

I'd be interested if I got an offical looking jacket, a walkie-talkie and a jobsworth attitude. :-)

Why not just create an official looking CCE jacket, get a walkie talkie (2m works well round Edinburgh or cb is unlicenced now, very quiet and 10 times better than prr) and adopt the attitude with any drivers who give you a hard time? :-))

(saves having to deal with the actual jobsworths ;-))
