THE new chief executive of Edinburgh city council has pledged to carve out a role as a figurehead for the capital just days after taking up the post.

Sue Bruce, the new chief executive of Edinburgh city council: 'It is important to understand how the city ticks.

Sue Bruce, who held the same post with Aberdeen city council for two years, has pledged to tour the city, network extensively and make a number of keynote speeches to the business community in a bid to make her mark.

This is actually quite interesting in all sorts of ways. This is not how things are 'done' in Edinburgh!! Chief Executives are seldom seen and rarely heard.

She's only just started the job, is 'responsible' for a massive debt, bin dispute, snow crisis, tram etc. and already wants to go walkabout.

I wonder what the Lord Provost thinks of the "figurehead" idea.

I assume she will be doing more than 'talking to the business community' (features heavily in that Scotsman piece).

Perhaps her tours will include some of Edinburgh's off road paths - though neither walking nor cycling feature in her official profile.

I hope she doesn't run up as big a debt as CEO of Edinburgh Council as Aberdeen Council did!

"I hope she doesn't run up as big a debt as CEO of Edinburgh Council as Aberdeen Council did!"

I think she came in after that and 'sorted' it.

It involved 'cuts' before the current UK wide call for universal defecit reducing action.

'We are all in this together' - presume Aberdeen more than most…(?)

Seriously, could the forum invite her on a guided tour by bike, to get her up to speed on cycling issues?

I'll volunteer for the legwork of writing a letter if people will back it up. (Where would we go, for example?)

take her from porty to south queensferry and to the bottom of ferry road, wich can be done almost traffic free. Good for demonstrating that there is more than one type of 'trunk route' that needs ploughed and gritted...

I have e-mailed her drawing attention to the Brussels Charter that CEC signed nearly 2 years ago.

Can't do any harm for people to ask her if she wants a guided tour.

Have to admit I'd never seen (or heard of) this before. Interesting that CEC were first to sign. Not sure I completely understand 1b though - sounds like carnage. Certainly something worth holding up on a regular basis as a mirror to CEC. Good move chdot.

    take her from porty

Make sure you point out the promenade is out of bounds for bicycles, then rattle her around the side streets and then dice with death at the Harry Lauder / Kings Road / Seafield junction.

Maybe if she isn't keen on pedalling we could all chip in and pay for her to have a laid back tour from the back of the Helios tandem, and we'll volunteer to act as protective peloton.

That's great idea. As a Museums and Galleries employee I'm not allowed to e-mail her directly so perhaps chdot can ask her. She might see it as a good photo opportunity.

Last year Spokes did a "top people's ride." As far as I recall the then Chief Exec wasn't interested but quite a few others came, as you can see...

We may do the same this year, in which case it'll be interesting to see if SB comes along.

Re. the Charter of Brussels comment, you can see the Council actually signing the document in Spokes Bulletin 105 on the Bulletin downloads page.
