CCE went live 11 years ago

    My Diary reminder says 8pm

    Presume that’s true

    Don’t remember why

On a personal level I now have 4 grandchildren (all well under 11, all with bicycles - parents too). I’ve also left Edinburgh - many reasons, including CEC sloth (not pretending I’ve moved anywhere more adept at wanting/enabling better).

Quite a few CECers now have under 11s and some have also moved away.

The (first) year of Covid has changed many things. Might even have caused the start of a bigger walk/cycling infrastructure than was managed in the previous 10 years.

Not that that is likely to balance all the downsides.

The wider environmental concerns have brought us Greta, and (?)

I hope CCE remains of value to people in another 11 years!

@CHDot good that your grandchildren have bikes and also parents.

Shame we can’t pub it but maybe Socially distanced meet outside Peter’s Yard / Soderberg this Friday is feasible ?

Despite the sluggishness of Lockdown the CEC officers continued to get some wands in.

@chdot - 2020 the year that changed everything (but not enough?).

Nice to hear of active grandchildren - inspired to see so many families adopting active travel, cargo bikes etc although the rise in driving your own PPE is now also evident.
Hopefully Fife will stay in level 2.

2020 to me really feels like a lost year: here we are at the end of October and I am having great difficulty understanding how it can be a whole year already since a bunch of us gathered at Summerhall to happily celebrate CCE at 10. Happy 11th birthday, CCE!

Like many others, in March my commute disappeared overnight. Almost immediately I switched to spending my time exploring on my bike; faraway, mythical places of unimagined riches, like Rosewell, Glencorse, Carrington, Temple, Gladhouse, Penicuik House, Edmonstone House, Danderhall, Millerhill...all places I'd been past any number of times, but never to. I resurrected my blue mountain bike, rode it for a few months then splurged on a bouncy mountain bike to save my wrists and shoulders. I may be riding a lot less than I was last year, with no commute and pretty well no holidaying, but I've definitely been enjoying riding again.

With uncharacteristic umbrage I prodded the Midlothian machine about one or two bicycular things over the past few months, but ML makes CEC sloth look positively energetic!

“ML makes CEC sloth look positively energetic!“

    Sad but true.

As with all councils ‘what gets done’ (not just cycling) depends on both officials and councillors, the interaction between them and sometimes assumptions of what councillors want.

Perhaps a bigger reason for priorities is what councillors think voters want. It seems MidL voters want to drive - possibly because the alternatives aren’t great...

All hail CCE, all hail those who sail in her, have sailed in her and will sail in her in the next eleven years.

I will tell you this: 2020 has at least starkly revealed what we are up against.

“2020 has at least starkly revealed what we are up against“

    Cryptic!

If you’re talking cycle infrastructure, some woolly arguments about ‘democracy’ have emerged.

More important it has revealed that stuff CAN be done.

Now we need to hope for/encourage new users and also work out how ‘temporary’ can become permanent (and better).

Presume this requires changes to E/T/TRO rules?

Never knowingly understood as the late, great Ivor Cutler had it.

Unlike arellcat, I'm struggling to believe that it was *only* a year ago...
