Pro-union side are obviously feeling buoyant. Latest poll was 'unweighted' according to some (inc John Curtice I think).
Trend though will revert towards self governance I feel. Then we can vote for parties in Scotland and get what we want or work in coalitions like a normal country. Using UK's clumsy attempts at border management as an example of how we would handle things here is worse case scenario.

Finally - consider this. No scandal seems to be able bring down the current Tory government - which is supported by minority here. Dishonesty and hubris are accepted and even when reported do not seem to deter voters in the south. This means Scotland and other devolved nations are being doubly disadvantaged. If SNP were to be brought down by a fraction of the irregularities that would lead to a one party, one state UK. Keir Starmer / Anas Sarwar have already signalled that there is to be no debate about Scotland's governance although that will create dissent in Labour party here.

Questions have been raised about the suitability of Edinburgh Tory councillor Susan Webber to stand for Holyrood after the revelation of controversial WhatsApp messages in which she said party leader Douglas Ross was “out of his mind” and accused politicians of “creating fear and panic” over Covid.

Another claimed the media and “many ill-informed politicians” were “creating panic and fear” over Covid-19, alleging the NHS was "not overwhelmed in terms of beds being filled”.

When restrictions were increased ahead of Christmas, Cllr Webber commented: "People die…. more people die in winter”.

And she welcomed the public sector pay freeze, saying it was “about time”. She wrote: “I was thinking of a vote-winning policy called salary sacrifice where they only get 80 per cent and have to struggle like the others on furlough. Then they might want this sorry state to get resolved faster.”

    Well, she seems nice.

    https://www.heraldscotland.com/news/19151326.tory-candidate-said-party-leader-out-mind-series-offensive-messages/

TORY activists have hit out at party bosses for ignoring concerns about a Holyrood candidate who described party leader Douglas Ross as “out of his mind” and accused politicians and the media of "creating panic and fear" over Covid-19.

Sue Webber, a Conservative councillor in Edinburgh, is on the cusp of being elected to Holyrood in May after being placed in second place on the party’s list for the Lothian region.

But party activists have raised concerns over for messages posted on a WhatsApp group for Conservative councillors, which they describe as "grossly inappropriate".

In the series of messages, seen by The Herald, Ms Webber stated that Mr Ross was "out of his mind" for refusing to oppose "crazy travel bans".

She also agreed that Prime Minister Boris Johnson is bolstering the case for independence.

In another message, Ms Webber told colleagues that the “media and many ill-informed politicians” were “creating panic and fear” over Covid-19, claiming that that the NHS was “not overwhelmed in terms of beds being filled”, adding that “poor decisions on timing of when they test still is creating pressure”.

When restrictions were increased before Christmas, Ms Webber wrote "people die ... more people die in winter".

She also described the First Minister as “egotistical madam Sturgeon”.

Ms Webber, who currently sits ahead of two sitting MSPs on the party's Lothian list, has been ranked on the list behind Miles Briggs, but ahead of current MSPs Jeremey Balfour and Gordon Lindhurst who has been demoted to seventh place after failing to secure an “endorsement” from Ruth Davidson.

A new specially-appointed central selection panel, chaired by Ms Davidson, has highlighted candidates that activists should have considered backing with her recommendation.

The party is thought to be confident its top three list candidates could secure election to Holyrood in the Lothians region, and potentially a fourth.

Activists say they taken their concerns about Ms Webber’s behaviour and views to party bosses but said their worries have fallen on deaf ears.

They have also highlighted what they labelled as "proper nasty Tory stuff" about the councillor's views on public sector workers.

In one message, Ms Webber praised public sector pay being frozen, saying it was “about time”, while after a colleague brought up council employees having to work extremely long hours, she added: “Welcome to the hours we work in the private sector”.
She wrote: “I was thinking of a vote-winning policy called salary sacrifice where they only get 80% and have to struggle like the others on furlough.

“Then they might want this sorry state to get resolved faster.”

A Conservative source said: “It’s clear that these remarks are grossly inappropriate and not befitting of any elected representative.

“Not only are they belligerent, but they are also hugely offensive.

“Concerns about Sue Webber’s comments and behaviour have been raised many times over the past few years, yet despite this the party still chose to endorse her as an MSP.

“Apologies now won’t cut it – the party needs to explain why they think she is still fit to stand.”

Angus Robertson, the SNP candidate for Edinburgh Central has suggested Ms Webber’s position as a candidate should be re-considered.

He said: “These explosive internal Tory messages show that they are still the nasty party.
"It is shocking that they have selected a candidate with such extreme views on the pandemic and who is contemptuous of public sector workers who have done so much for us during lockdown.

"Susan Webber has been ranked second by the Conservatives in Lothian, relegating sitting Tory MSPs, and is well placed to become an MSP. Having been exposed for her extreme views, it is hard to see how she can now remain a Tory candidate.”

Lib Dem MSP Alex Cole-Hamilton, who is defending his Edinburgh Western seat at May’s election, has described the messages as “deeply troubling”.

He added: "While our NHS and public sector staff work hard to get us through the pandemic, Sue Webber is suggesting docking their pay. “For her to be ranked above sitting Conservative MSPs on the list suggests that her party has taken a turn for the extreme.
"She's right about one thing though: Boris Johnson is the nationalist's dream recruiting sergeant. Both sides thrive on petty squabbles while Scotland suffers. “At this election, Scottish Liberal Democrats can offer something better - a party focused on the issues that really matter; education, mental health and jobs."

A Scottish Conservative party spokesman said: "Candidates, councillors and other members often share views with each other on group chats on a private and informal basis and they are reminded about the importance of being considerate and measured while doing so."

Ms Webber was contacted for comment.

She’s going to be a straight replacement for Michelle Ballantine in the Tory Holyrood ranks.

controversial WhatsApp messages in which she said party leader Douglas Ross was “out of his mind”

Maybe she was just being polite.

People in political parties don’t get on shock.

“Then they might want this sorry state to get resolved faster.”

Well that’s true, not sure she’s got the ‘answers’ though.

Maybe she planning to join Priti in a new party. The Real Tories perhaps?

Conservative candidate found to hold extremely right wing views. Surely the person at number 3 must be wondering how this happened? Ruth Davidson endorsed Susan Weber for sure, you would think there were other suitable candidates unless there is an inner circle?

A new specially-appointed central selection panel, chaired by Ms Davidson, has highlighted candidates that activists should have considered backing with her recommendation.

So the Tories now have a choice -

Remove her as a candidate or accept that someone with these sorts of opinions will represent the party at Holyrood.

Perhaps those who would have to sit alongside her might like to say if they would be ok with that?

If I was looking for a source for the leak of these comments I’d be looking at the friends of the current list MSP who has been bumped down to candidate number 7...

@stickman you might be on to something there.

A top 3 is what they need to get into holyrood. So demoted to 7th is perhaps evidence of not being in the inner circle

The Labour election launch has started. There is a live feed here.

It is a GB-wide event, with contributions from Scotland and Wales.

The first speech was from Anas Sarwar, the new Scottish Labour leader. He said he wanted people to know that the party was on their side.

The person at number 3 quite possibly agrees with everything Cllr Webber said, and probably isn't too keen to start down the route towards deselecting controversial, outspoken, non-politically correct candidates.

" No scandal seems to be able bring down the current Tory government"

It really is odd, Governments North and South of the border are rancid, but still people seem to want to vote for them.

I blame the weak opposition parties unable to hold them to account...

@baldcyclist - Governments North and South of the border are rancid,

Do you include Wales in that? Friends in Amsterdam aren't too keen on their government. Jan at Azub in Czech Republic isn't happy with politics there either...

    Disenchantment seems universal.

Isle of Man is ok though heard that CV-19 is back.

I think I’d rather see her as a new list MSP in a small Tory Holyrood group than a councillor in the large Edinburgh group.

    @stickman, like you thinking

Often the pecadillos of councillors don’t come to light until the greater scrutiny of being an MSP

I wanted to say the same thing as this, but couldn't find a nice way to put it.

    Damage limitation and all that

It may be useful context for her NHS comments to know that Cllr Webber also does sales/marketing in the medical supplies field.

So depending on your point of view and/or biases, you may either say she knows what she's talking about or that there's a potential conflict of interest when she's talking about public sector health organisations.

    - Nick Cook, who the EEN had on speed dial for comment on everything, steps down as Transport Spokesperson
    - Susan Webber becomes Transport Spokesperson
    - Nick Cook announces he will not stand as Councillor again
    - Jason Rust now appears frequently in the EEN commenting on issues in neighbouring Morningside ward, which Nick Cook represents and would normally be expected to comment on
    - Susan Webber appears at the top of the Lothian candidate list
    - a local Conservative party member leaks WhatsApp conversations which show Susan Webber in a bad light.

The above events are totally unconnected.

Webber is a particularly Nasty member of that party. She is currently waging a personal war against the spaces for people projects which the head of the Party is outwardly supportive of. As others have suggested on Twitter she presumably isn't as thick as she claims to be in here inability to understand a white line on a road.

Looking at the other candidates on the list they are without fail Male and white. Is there a dearth of female candidates in the Tory party?

“Is there a dearth of female candidates in the Tory party?“

Isn’t there in all parties these days?

Plus, I would suggest anyone wanting to be a politician is even more of an oddity now.

Before zipping, Labour is 50 / 50 men and women in the top four for all regions.

Zipping has disadvantaged some women in some areas

I don’t know what zipping is

But reading the names (some I know) is certainly more reassuring as regards a sane person being elected through the lists compared with reading the conservative list for Lothians.

I was doorstopped a few years ago by someone who introduced themselves as the new prospective LibDem Cllr for my area. We had a good chat for about 20minutes or so.

It has since turned out that she has fallen out with the party due to sexism allegations, so I wouldn't necessarily say all is well in that camp.

Wonder if LAs and how they are funded will figure much in this election?

“Any such review should begin by focusing on council tax, which is poorly designed, out of date, and unpopular,” they write. “This tax is based, in England and Scotland, on property valuations that are now almost 30 years old and therefore bear no resemblance to the realities of current house prices. It would appear that council tax is a material wealth tax for those in modest houses but is a service charge for those in wealthier areas. This places the heaviest burden on the young, low-earners, and those living in less prosperous parts of the country, who typically reside in modest properties.”

Horrible, so we know now that SNP and Lib Dems approach to claims of sexual harrasment of members of staff is simply to try and brush it under the carpet. We know the Tories are horrible in all sorts of ways.

The list of parties one can vote for in May without holding their nose seems to be diminishing...
