Aye, was the same on 6music. Friday guest mix interrupted by dead air, then the po-faced announcement of national mourning, and God Save The Queen. Like time travelling back to the 1950s. I switched the thing off.

@crowriver @gembo BBC radio has single unified programme even on Radio 3 and Radio nan Gàidheal (in English of course).
BBC TV all channels has Huw Edwards talking to people about the Duke's contributions and his Danish and German connections (although born on Corfu).
Not sure if he has any cycling relevance. Boats were his thing.

Unionist parties have announced they are suspending election campaigning until Monday. We're all supposed top be mourning for the next eight days apparently. No public holiday though, noses to the grindstone plebs.
Well the monarchy and the state propaganda unit can do one as far as I'm concerned!

‘Sake when Princess Di Di-Ed I went up Arthur’s seat and saw no one
Bit like one World Cup final walked the entire Kips and saw no one
Posted 4 years ago # -
You’re not saying current event is gluing people to the telly??
Posted 4 years ago # -
No, @chdot, I am saying the Princess Di was a public holiday and we are not getting one for Phil The Greek
Posted 4 years ago # -
Good news!!!
Looks like most BBC staff are having the day off...

At the risk of seeming slow on the uptake but it has only just occurred to me that we no longer have a Duke to call our own
Posted 4 years ago # -
@STILTSKIN do we need one?
Posted 4 years ago # -
You never know when you might need one
Posted 4 years ago # -
Some dukes might not be racist or sexist?
Not sure how many come from the likes of us?
Posted 4 years ago # -
No the point I was making is that it never occurred to me that the ‘Duke-of-Edinburgh’ was in fact the Duke of Edinburgh the place where I live. So he was my Duke. Bit late now of course. The penny only dropped today when the lady on the BBC wittered something about the people of Edinburgh had a particular connection with him ...ummm. Don’t it always seem to go.....

I’ve seen photos of more media than flowers at H Palace, so perhaps it’s not well known...
Posted 4 years ago # -
Apparently we now get Edward.
Posted 4 years ago # -
The title is inherited by the eldest son, so Charles will be Duke of Edinburgh until the queen dies, at which point Charles can make Edward the new duke.
Posted 4 years ago # -
We read somewhere that the palace had announced in 1999 Edward would take it, in place of Charles
Posted 4 years ago # -
Was there not also chatter about making Edward and Soph move to edinburgh permanently to save the Union ?
Posted 4 years ago # -
@SRD - I think the palace announced that the Queen wanted Edward to become Duke of Edinburgh, but he still needs to wait for the Queen to die. He also needs Charles to respect her wish, but that is probably not a problem.
The dukedom skipping Charles would probably not be a precedent the royals are willing to start at the moment...

@frenchy you are clearly more up on such things than me. I thought these these were just handed out like sweeties.

Interesting societal response on the "Meadows Chat" facebook page to police presence in the meadows this weekend, following last weekends antisocial behaviour. A certain SNP list candidate (hence me posting on this thread) has been posting about his engagement with authorities to bolster the police presence and restore order. Not unreminiscent of a certain West Edinburgh Liberal candidate in style in my opinion.
It's not gone down very well with the yoof as far as I can tell. As a privileged Marchmont Resident who this behaviour has directly affected, I think an over-authoritarian response is absolutely not what is needed. The behaviour was pretty bad I grant you, but these kids have had so much taken from them while coincidentally being told the virus probably isn't going to affect them.
Various aghast Marchmont residents with their own gardens are calling for extra police. I sympathise with the fear and disgust they feel, but I really believe that a strengthened authoritarian response is only going to cement the inequalities and divisions that already exist.
There's an amazing response by a guy called Murray (who runs something called Autism on the Water I believe) who goes out with others to clean up the meadows after these events. He needs to be applauded I think for his community work here (and other stuff he does but I'm not fully up on it). To me his response seems pretty unjudgemental and measured.

“to clean up the meadows after these events“
Which in an ‘ideal world’ shouldn’t be necessary.
But I’m assuming there’s not nearly enough bin capacity in the area?

Well that's one day of mourning chalked up. Only another seven days to go!

So many stories of the duke we never knew - how he met Bob Dylan but went off him after he went electric etc. Private Eye must be doing a bumper issue.
Scottish Greens have been criticised for not being respectful enough. Holyrood also criticised for not using powers it has. Prince Philip was very much a Royal Navy man and according to state media an early conservationist. He might like the cut of their jib on this. Subs a hazard for yachting etc.
“We are quite sure that any such change would be challenged in the courts by the warmongers at Westminster, a challenge we would welcome. No stone can be left unturned in the campaign to rid Scotland and the world of these weapons of mass slaughter.”
An extract on the policy which is included in the external affairs section of the Scottish Greens’ manifesto reads: “Be a force for peace. The Scottish Greens believe in a world free of nuclear weapons. We will:
• Continue to oppose the housing of nuclear submarines and weapons in Faslane.
• Amend the Marine Scotland Act to ban the movement of nuclear weapons through Scottish waters.”
The Conservative Government announced in mid March it would be increasing the number of its nuclear warhead stockpile to up to 260 after previously saying it aimed to reduce their number to not more than 180 by the mid-2020s.
Ministers also said they will no longer provide figures on how many of the warheads are operational.
CURRENTLY, the UK has a stockpile of 190 warheads, according to the Federation of American Scientists.
The move was widely condemned as a waste of money at a time when huge pressures are on the economy and health service because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Some defence analysts also feared it could lead to other country’s increasing the stockpiles.
Nick Witney, former chief executive of the European Defence Agency, said: “It provides greater arguments for proliferators around the world.”

I’m quite intrigued by the references to him as a moderniser in the Guardian obit (which is the only thing I’ve read). Ended ‘debutantes at court’, requiring palace servants to powder their hair, sending his kids to school etc.
My objection to the ‘national mourning’ has little to do with him, and everything to do with the institution of the monarchy as a whole.

“My objection to the ‘national mourning’ “
Is it “law” or even the wish of the Queen?
Posted 4 years ago # -
Not a law, afaik, but I don’t know where or how such decisions are made.
Posted 4 years ago # -
“I don’t know where or how such decisions are made“
Which is a big part of the ‘issue’.
Whatever anyone thinks of the monarchy or PP, there must be questions about scope and scale.
Simple facts - very old man married to someone important died.
Expect flags at half mast, bit of solemn music, tributes - but complete programme changes on 6 Music for days??

Viewers switched off their TVs in droves after broadcasters aired blanket coverage of Philip’s death, audience figures revealed on Saturday. Along with the removal of shows including EastEnders, Gardeners’ World and the final of MasterChef, BBC Four was taken off air and replaced with a notice urging viewers to switch to BBC One. It had been due to show the England women’s football team play France in an international friendly

So what is planned for when the Queen dies?
Might help to know/understand in advance.

This might be more relevant to this thread -
“
The pandemic has seeded the idea of a prime minister “who speaks for England alone” as relations between the four nations of the UK deteriorate amid “deep-rooted complacency”, a senior former civil servant has warned.
There is widespread ignorance towards the union, meaning ministers can be kept in the dark about major reforms with little consideration for the four nations, Sir Philip Rycroft, the permanent secretary to the Brexit department until 2019, says in a report.
His damning conclusion says the 300-year-old union is in deep peril and even major political ructions such as the close-run 2014 Scottish referendum and the following year’s SNP landslide prompted little soul-searching in Westminster.

constitutional anecdote / comparative example.
Canada's 'con-federal' constitution was designed to be very unitary, in response to what was seen as the very damaging US civil war. Only 'minor' powers were given to the provinces - eg healthcare, education etc. important powers were to be held by the federal government.
however, the constitutional architects did not anticipate the 20th century's immense expansion in importance of healthcare and education, giving provinces much more importance than they were ever 'intended' to hold.
draw your own conclusions....

She, her consort, and other members of the Canadian Royal Family undertake various public and private functions across the country. However, the Queen is the only member of the Royal Family with any constitutional role.
