I'm confused; I thought rickshaws were human or bike powered, and I thought cycles couldn't go on the Western Approach?

@the canuck Yes I used to think that until I discovered that the eastern section is quite legal to cycle on from Lothian Road to Drysdale Road. This newish street links Dundee St to WAR beside Moda City new build and Fountainpark. Beyond the traffic lights there cycling is red circled. So you shouldn't cycle to the Diggers pub etc!

I often cycle the short section from toucan crossing on all manner of bikes but 'know' a lot of drivers 'think' I shouldn't.
There is a shared use path there but dug up a bit. This is useful to avoid the 'hard to use' zig zag ramp that aligns with Leamington route. Basically the WAR is becoming just another street at that end and does have bike and bus lane markings in places.

On the toucan crossing I believe. The WAR really is an outdated concept. Give drivers four lanes and they drive like it's a motorway.

The WAR is really confusing. Didn’t it used to be the case that you could only cycle on the first 50 yards or so from Lothian Rd to the junction with Canning Street? I notice from street view that there is a ‘no cycling’ sign as you join the WAR from the Morrison Link. How does that tie in?

It seems they were hit at the toucan crossing next to Morrison Crescent rather than having ridden on the WAR itself. There’s been a few hit and runs there, speed limit/red light compliance is rather… questionable.

On the WAR itself, there's a bemusing mandatory cycle lane that runs from the Canning Street junction to the Sheraton service entrance, at which point cycling is banned any further on the WAR. I can imagine quite a few people seeing the cycle lane and assuming you can cycle much further.

horrific that they were hit on the crossing. has been wondering about it, but hadn't even occurred to me that they'd have been hit on the crossing.

    @Alex @the canuck

On the WAR itself, there's a bemusing mandatory cycle lane that runs from the Canning Street junction to the Sheraton service entrance, at which point cycling is banned any further on the WAR.

Only gone on that bit once at the height of lockdown last year. So stand corrected that the WAR east of Drysdale Road is cyclable.
Looking at streetview there are loads of red circled U turn signs but only one white lamppost sign with cycling and pedestrian ban after Sheraton. Morrison St link is clear but I usually nip through via toucan. First repeat red circle is at Drysdale Rd.

Very tragic event as crossing should be safe route. Hope those injured make full recovery.

    "Morrison St link is clear"

There's a small red circled bike sign on the left just at the junction with WAR. Would be easy to miss. All a bit of a bourach.

Needs to be buses and bikes only...

Western Approach road is only half tamed. It is gradually turning into a street as more residential buildings are put up beside it, but it hasn't gone the whole way yet and still looks enough like a motorway for drivers to put their feet down.

There is NO good reason why there should be so much space for motors.

Historically this is what’s left from the *grand* plan to bring the M8 into Lothian Road.

Clearly it is of some benefit to Dalry Road. IF all the traffic was removed from the WAR and the same volume was allowed to switch...

‘Obviously’ can’t expect any sudden changes because of one crash (however serious) BUT it’s just the latest example of why things/attitudes/policies NEED to change.

WAR signage. Biggest bike sign heading west is a warning of bikes triangle as you enter from Lothian Road.

Does the "No pedestrians" in LaidBack's photo 2 and 3 apply to the wide pavements they're placed on? Pedestrians are obviously allowed further west on the shared use pavement before being promptly banned again at Drysdale Rd.

The WAR has turned into a confusing mishmash of restrictions for all vulnerable road users.

“The WAR has turned into a confusing mishmash of restrictions for all vulnerable road users.”

    AND

All the recent and planned developments seem to neither improve things much nor address options/benefit from opportunities.

Developers seldom think ‘customers (purchases/renters) would benefit from better non-car access’.

Disappointing but predictable. CEC Planners not demanding ‘better’ is worse than disappointing.

Interestingly they've also been charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice. Wonder what they tried to do after the collision?

That article doesn't say what they've been charged with - perhaps removed for legal reasons?

Looks like I copied in the wrong link, two very similar articles on the BBC site. Should work now.

I clearly have too much time on my hands, but there's a guy with that name on Twitter whose handle is a bunch of numbers, and photos include Union Jacks and football stuff.

I'm in Twitter Jail, or I'd look him up to see if he complains about cyclists too.

Yes, you're correct! Google was being too clever for it's own good.
