@SRD - by EEN standards that article could be called neutral to supportive. Well done to you & Ewen.

From previous page (quote from EN article)

Transport and Environment Convener Councillor Lesley Macinnes said: “We’re aware of the reaction from the public in favour of retaining the Lanark Road scheme.

It’s almost as though the refusal to agree with officers’ recommendations was designed to cause a ‘backlash’ so Cllrs could say ‘we’ve listened to public opinion and changed our minds’.

Well I can’t think of any other reason other than that too many Cllrs are scared of losing theirs seats ‘because everyone knows only motorists vote’.

IF Lanark Road is reprieved it’s vital that CEC makes it *better* (whatever that means).

Yes, congratulations to all who have worked on this (and supported it) but it shouldn’t have been necessary and it feels like ‘cyclists’ have been used as pawns in a dirty political game.

The fact that many of ‘us’ also drive (perhaps less often and more considerately than some others) will of course be ignored by those perpetuating the myth of ‘war on motorists’.

‘We’ want a better city to live in - not just for our personal advantage - and an improved chance of any sort of future less blighted by the effects of Climate Change.

    Kevin Lang @kevin_lang

    2h

For every email I’ve had demanding we keep the Lanark Road cycle lanes, I’m getting one demanding they be removed. The botched handling of Spaces for People by this SNP/Lab administration has created such a highly polarised debate.

Superb handling would also lead to polarization as drivers want to park with impunity and drive where they like. I mean the polarized drivers.

Every commentator inclufding Kevin Lang also polarized

    Coalition polarised within itself too!

Perhaps they can cobble together a compromise around the Green amendment(?)

If not, I hope some councillors will have the integrity to abstain if not actually vote against removal.

Cycle lanes vs parking spaces for the same stretch of street are polar opposites. How could they be anything else? Naturally this issue will be polarised.

Polarised implies (or perhaps is just *assumed* to be about) ‘equivalents’. So - equal and opposite case/numbers for parking/cycle lanes(?)

***Excellent*** turn out. Loads of self-propelling kids there, which was excellent to see.

Moment of comedy when the Boardwalk Beach Club guy manoeuvred his way though in his mahoosive 4x4 when the group stopped to turn back at Spylaw.

Thanks everyone for the turnout - somewhere around 200 but I didn't count.

From twitter : “Thanks all who got in touch on Lanark Rd, including good suggestions from locals on how to improve it.
We’re asking Council to pause removal to get more data on usage. Final decision in Sep. & asking officers to engage further with residents & community councils in meantime.”

Great turnout and good to see so many people (and bikes) of all shapes sizes and ages! Seen a few familiar faces too.

I'm not local but I regularly use this road.

That's part of the point of roads - people use them to get from one place to another, without actually living on them.

In a curious case of amnesia for any driver against this scheme the roads to the west and east of Lanark Road are all more congested than Lanark Road even with these schemes.

It could be that when it was two lanes and 40 mph you could get the foot down and shave a minute off your journey time whilst making it dangerous for pedestrians to cross.

Living on the street apart from the parking issue must be better now surely?

I was there too - but in disguise as a MAWIL rather than the Brompton rider most people might recognise...

    @gembo

The limiting factor on journey times on that road is the capacity, and hence waiting time, at the junctions at either end, i.e. Gillespies crossroads and Inglis Green Rd.

It wouldn't make a difference to journey times even if the speed limit were 20, 30, 40 or even 70mph!

Journey times on city streets are determined by the junctions, not any maximum speed that can be achieved in between. This is why I believe they should reduce capacity for cars at junctions and favour other modes (which "roads dept" are still relunctant to do - witness bus lanes and bike lanes "giving up" at junctions)

@neddie, agreed, I know this from commuting that route for ten years.

You know well that Juni is a pinch point,

The drivers all stacked in single occupant huge vehicles all like to feel they can floor it once past Gillespies but in fact all they do is meet the other single occupant drivers at the Slateford Junction.

This is mostly about Susan Webber as the locals don’t seem too fussed about parking? Through my rose tinted sunspecs
