"Also...Team GB includes NI ? Must be odd being in a team that is named after neighbouring island?"

there is a longish twitter thread about this after I querie. short version is that NI athletes can choose which team to compete on.

The Irish Rugby team comes from the whole island

The GB&NI vs Ireland olympic affiliation of a particular sport depends on the individual sports governing body.
@gembo's example of rugby is one where the IRFU covers the game on the whole island. So players from the 6 counties would play for Ireland, not GB.
Soccer is an example where NI has the IFA governing in the 6 counties separate from the 26 counties where the sport is governed by the FAI.
The Commonwealth Games is where this breaks down as NI represents as a nation and will sneak in players from the 6 counties even from a sport that is "island wide".
A player could represent Ireland in the Olympics but represent GB&NI in the CG!

I watched the women's skateboarding. The "women" are girls just old enough to go to the big school, all laughing and hugging each other then do these astonishing tricks on concrete walls.

I hardly ever watch sport but it occurred to me that these girls could teach those grown up blokes that play football a thing or two about falling over. The girls take tumbles at high speed on concrete and bounce up, still smiling, while a slight tap floors those footballing blokes and they writhe about in agony.

@srd every time the commissaires make a ruling now Boardie is right on it. The Danes had caught GB but clumsily. So agree Kismet Karma. Tough on Katy Marchant today too.

The Danes appear to have been using illegal leg tap when they ran over the Brits.

All the home nations compete under their own flag at the commonwealth games. As such nobody represents GB at the CG. Is there any other sports/events where NI has it's own team?

Been enjoying omnium, keirin, sprint and so on with track. Exciting stuff. Also checking out the race walking just now: gripping viewing, quite a few similarities to a cycling tour. The distance, the tactics, breakaways, chasing groups. Walking 50k at that pace though in 32+ celsius and 70% humidity - the pain!

Archibald and Kenny living up to their reputations. Basically Archibald did all the work and just there she produced a masterful slingshot for Kenny to take The Glory. No one else really turned up they were so dominant.

This has been very good as Team GB cycling were treading water a little with silvers and then Max Wall’s Gold (I know his name is Matt) But this one was up there with the other dominant teams eg Nederland men, Danes/Italian pursuit, German Women

The fluro yellow helped them spot each other. As Russian, and French have very similar kit.

was brilliant. agree archibald was key but that final lap by laura kenny, and the safe timing of all their exchanges made them a good pair.

hadn't realised Carlin was a Scot. But BBC lady's response to Hoy commenting on the good run of scot sprinters most odd.

Jack Carlin comes from Paisley hence the comment about his skinsuit having a wee bit of paisley pattern in it

For anyone who has forgotten -

Katie Archibald, MBE is a Scottish racing cyclist, who currently rides on the track for Great Britain and Scotland.

She has a sporting background in swimming and took up cycling relatively late, taking it up competitively in 2011 on the grass track and in 2012 on hard track.

Someone doing the 'live' coverage on the BBC web site has decided to have a bit of a giggle:

    Women's modern pentathlon
Noticed one of the other horses eliminated was called Aerosmith.
Clearly, he didn't listen when Ecuadorian rider Marcela Cuaspub was telling him to Walk This Way...

@gembo it wasn't the paisley but her determination to say (twice?) a great result for all britain.... seemed very anxious to balance Hoy's 'scotland' angle.

    @srd, missed that bit.

Apparently the Republic of Ireland does not have a velodrome.

Katie Archibald born in Chertsey so technically English. Brother John born in Edinburgh so Scottish. However if they both identify as/live in Jocko Homo it's all good. Katie a member of City of Edinburgh Racing Club too.

Carlin appears to be solidly a Paisley man.

New velodrome in Glesca will have done the Scottish track specialists a power of good for sure.

No-one else watch the race walking? Can recommend. :-)

@crowriver, one of the walkers has radicalized the sport by taking his water in a Musette and walking with it. Did he win?

Love it when they get penalized for putting in a wee skip

@gembo, he did! The Polish chap.

Was trying to figure out the penalties system, seems pretty strict. Not sure I could operate under such conditions but it was quite compelling viewing I must say.

Also refreshing to watch an event where Team GB were nowhere to be seen. Closest we got was an Irish fella who came in among the early finishers, 11th I think 10th place.

Will try to catch the women's event at some point too. Shorter at just 20km, so might be able to watch the whole thing in one go.

@SRD, I too seem to remember it in the late 1970s, bit of a craze at the time? Canada took the bronze medal in the men's 50k yesterday.

Race walking further notable for no USA, Russian presence either in addition to no Brits. I suppose no expensive facilities required for this sport, just good shoes and rigorous technique.

This Olympics has piqued my interest in two sports which didn't really notice on television before - triathlon and race walking. Will be seeking them out in future.

    Interesting discussion here.

The Seeds of Disrespect for Racewalking

Lack of respect also likely comes from the top competitors being non-Anglo. Russia, Mexico, Ecuador, and Poland are fielding the best — and thus the sport is bound to get less press as the USA, Canada, and Britain finish out of the medals.

(Perhaps not accurate for Canada any more).

Keirin popularity in Japan due to being able to gamble on the races. Gambling being restricted to a narrow range of sports events.

Chr8s Hoy saying put a tenner on Kenny,

Ethan Hayter said the Madison was F@#&ing hard. He is the new Bradley Wiggins.

the sport that has most unexpectedly gripped us (npi) is the women's climbing yesterday.

Been catching up on the track cycling. Madison is insane! Also watched women's marathon, tried to find the women's 20k race walking but no sign of it anywhere on television or online. Certainly seems like only certain sports are deemed popular or televisual enough to broadcast to the Western Anglo audience. Golf, diving, etc. Not forgetting the cheering on the team angle: hours of horse jumping if that's your thing. I'm not a fan of wrestling or karate for instance, but if I was I'd struggle to find coverage on the BBC, maybe some on Eurosport.

@crowriver: I'd struggle to find coverage on the BBC, maybe some on Eurosport.

Eurosport paid £1.1billion for the primary rights to the Olympics Europe-wide for the period 2018-2024. They sub-license to national broadcasters such as the BBC, but the terms state that the BBC can show no more than 2 live events at a time. So a lot of the lack of coverage on the BBC will be due to that. Some of the more obscure stuff might be shown in their highlights programmes, which can then be watched on iPlayer (though some folks - myself included - find that the iPlayer search facility is not very straightforward and it can be difficult to locate specific events).
