If only we had a "Network Roads" organisation to charge as criminals for all the fatalities on the roads...

To ensure we have enough space to meet demand, we are running additional bus services:

Feedback from my Friday lunch with friends from the DfT/Treasury/Cabinet Office and this week a friend from NIO. 1/5. Despite a return from silly season absolutely nothing on HS2, not a mention! Officials are relieved that nothing stupid has been said. Yet.

2/5. Talk is he would have preferred to bin the whole of HS2 but works are too advanced. Will Ph2 and Euston be ditched? Wait till the Party Conference or if not by then it should emerge from the Autumn Spending Review. The PM is extremely anti-rail.

Our off-peak all day: cheaper and simpler fares trial starts on 2 October. We know you have lots of questions and we have our Managing Director, Alex Hynes to answer some of the most frequently asked such as, will there be crowding at busier times and what will ScotRail do if so?

One of the stated aims was to have more people going into the office again. Not sure cheaper trains will have any impact there.

For me 3 days wah is great for more family time, less commuting etc, that said will appreciate the cheaper fares 2 days a week. :)

Although the cheaper fare may make cycling less atractive from a 'money' perspective for those that take that into consideration. If you are no longer saving any cash cycling one way, what's the point?
I stil will for the excersise perspective, but will buy a return anyway incase bail out needed at any point

IT’S ITALY’S MOST EPIC SLEEPER TRAIN: Over 950 miles from Milan to Palermo, it’s a train that goes onto a boat, and a private single-bed sleeper cost me all of €84.90. I can resist anything except temptation…

    Really?

Scottish Transport Minister @FionaHyslop tells Holyrood Committee there will be no @ScotRail ticket offices closing in Scotland - and brands the policy 'damaging' in other parts of the UK.

Reasoning includes ensuring accessibility for people with disabilities.

Already closed the advanced ticket office at Waverley. The experts in getting you the best ticket are all in the same office now as the day ticket sales. I used to like pulling the wee paper ticket and seeing how far my number was from the Now Serving number. Wander off to buy lunch, come back just in time to be served etc.

Now you can do this at home. But you might make mistakes. As my office is very close to Waverley I just like to go in. Nice station, good shops, lovely staff.

But then I tend to use local bike shops instead of ordering on line. Also getting out and about to bakeries in west lothian and south Lanarkshire and even Humbie and once to the Wee cafe beyond SamyeLing. At Eskdalemuir Hub.

Ayr Toon Senna not looking good. Station hotel which the actual train line goes underneath is on fire again. The owner’s identity not clear, has been wrapped in polythene for years. Scandalous.

Douglas Ross not asked what he thought on scrapping Peak Rail fares on BBC. Too busy crowing about the extra £120 million he's giving to 7 Scottish councils (over 10 years). Will UK Gov fund the vital A9 dualling. Doubt it!

In an alternative universe you'd think the nationalisation and removal of peak fares story might fuel demands for same in England.

Does today's edition cover? Not prominently if at all. Odd as they must have readers here that support green policies.

We can't even electrify the damn railway all the way to Aberdeen and Inverness.

But then, look to history: the ECML didn't get electricity to York until 1989, and Edinburgh by 1991, because they opted to use diesels as an interim measure. The WCML was electrified all the way to Glasgow by 1974.

Where has all the impetus gone*?

    “Impetus”?

Do you mean ‘pipeline of supply chains’?

In fairness, Scotland has been electrifying the railways at a steady pace for ages and has a reasonably credible plan to completely decarbonise by 2035. Unfortunately, this will probably soak up all the investment we're currently willing to give them so rail will continue to be a poor cousin to the roads when travelling north of the Central Belt.

Meanwhile, work is to get underway this month on a scheme developed by Transport Scotland and Network Rail for the partial electrification of the Fife Circle, when Network Rail launches the first piling drive between Haymarket and Dalmeny. Under the £55m work package, foundations will be laid for masts that will carry overhead wires up to the Forth Bridge; a total of 25 track-km is to be electrified by December 2024. This would support the planned operation of BEMUs on the reopened line to Leven.

A rolling programme of electrification is also being proposed which would eventually extend to Dundee and Aberdeen.

‘Delivery of the Fife Decarbonisation project will support introduction of new rolling stock through partial electrification’, said Scottish Transport Minister Jenny Gilruth on June 1. ‘It will also help towards the delivery of our Rail Decarbonisation Action Plan which will see removal of all diesel on passenger services by 2035.’

Had assumed Leven line would start with battery trains.

Not least because SR will need more trains.

    But -

    "

Work on the Levenmouth Rail Link is scheduled to complete in spring 2024 and services will initially be in introduced using diesel trains. By this point however, the line will be future-proofed to enable the introduction of Battery Electric Multiple Units (BEMUs) to replace life-expired diesel units which will be phased out on completion of the wider Fife electrification project.

    Not sure I follow?

They plan to electrify Leven to Thornton and also Haymarket to Dalmeny? Leaving the batteries to jump the gap between the Forth Bridge and Thornton?

Seems an odd way to proceed

“Seems an odd way to proceed“

    Well yes

The point (I assume) is that the overheads will be for charging the batteries.

Not sure they have figured out how to put wires across the Forth Bridge, so batteries is probably ‘simpler’(?)

Eight station platforms on the iconic West Highland Line are being lengthened to cater for cyclists and tourists.

Network Rail says that platforms need to be 15 metres longer because of plans by ScotRail for an additional coach on each service with extra space for bikes and ‘the leisure market’.
