You need to get most of the way through the press release before they admit it's a cut. Albeit a small one.

"In real terms (i.e. 2023/24 prices), the CP7 plan for England & Wales and Scotland amounts to £42.8bn compared to £43bn in CP6."

Tourism reliant businesses in the Scottish Highlands have slammed the operator of a "lucrative" steam train service for refusing to comply with safety requirements that would allow it to continue to operate.

WCR told The Scotsman on Friday the compliant carriages had been part of its fleet for 20 years and had planned to have them “ready for use” at the start of the season, but its engineers had “encountered some challenges and were only able to get them ready for service from mid-April”.

So presumably WCRC were just trying it on when they said it would cost them £7m to fit the Jacobite rake with CDL, given that they now seem to have had compliant stock in their fleet all along. Seven-letter <rule2> word beginning with t (plural).

Does JK know that the Jacobite used to have a "Harry Potter" coach, I wonder. If so then I'm surprised they didn't try to get her to lobby the DfT (along with their local MPs and sundry others) to tell the nasty ORR to stop insisting that WCRC comply with the law. (The DfT very sensibly said that it wasn't a matter for them to get involved with.)

A pity Mr Yeowart is not likely to be flush enough to order new trains?

Louise Haigh Labour Transport Shadow just on R4. Seems to be happy with "Great British Railways"

‘All trains will be rebranded eventually’ - except Lumo, Hull etc

    No mention of Scotland/Scotrail

Seems no plan to take over ROSCOs

    Mmm

The railways are already 80% nationalised. Is it really such a big step...

    https://news.stv.tv/scotland/peak-time-scotrail-fares-scrapped-for-further-three-months-announced-first-minister-john-swinney

Most online news stories using “scrapped”.

    Seems odd

‘Peak fares cut extended’ seems more accurate and understandable(?)

The cash would be far, far better invested in a flat rate £2 single bus fare across Scotland, which has been in operation in England for the last 18 months or so. Much better targeted at lower income groups and the large parts of Scotland with no rail service.

It is with great sadness that we have been subject to vandalism and fire raising at our 30 year old ‘O’ Gauge model railway at the Bo’ness and Kinneil railway during the early hours of Sunday morning.

Passengers taking the Eurostar from St Pancras will be expected to arrive at the station at least two hours before departure. Currently travellers are advised to arrive 90 minutes in advance.

Well that blows out any slight advantage over the plane.

We're going to burn this planet, aren't we?

The reporting on this is pretty garbled but AIUI air passengers will also face delays, but it will be on first arrival at an EU airport rather than on departure from the UK. So, turn up half an hour earlier at St Pancras and have a clear run through from there, or turn up at a UK airport at the current normal 2 hours before departure and face an additional 30 minute delay on arrival in the EU.

As far as I can make out it will only apply to the first time you travel into the EU. Once they have your face and fingerprint scans you will just need to be checked against the biometric ID they already hold, much like using an e-passport at the automated passport control gates.

The government has “achieved very little” in reforms to Great Britain’s railways six years after identifying the need for big changes to improve the situation for passengers and taxpayers, according to an influential parliamentary committee.

MPs on the cross-party public accounts committee said the Department for Transport has not paid enough attention to the needs of passengers or taxpayers, six years after a botched introduction of new timetables led to chaos on the rail network and a widespread consensus that deep changes were needed.
