Just a heads up that the cycleway on Canaan Lane is to be closed until 31st July 2022 to enable construction of the flats at the old public toilets. It remains to be seen whether the pedestrian access, which will be under the scaffolding, will have space to manoeuvre a bike through easily.

Such a desperate lack of imagination and holistic thinking on the part of the developers and CEC.

Shipping containers are used elsewhere as temporary protected walkways and cycleways. For example, Toronto.

Honestly it seems like there's just no appetite/ability for it in the council. I've been trying to work with them on this particular closure for a while as it's really going to impact people travelling to the South Morningside Primary annexe. The developers were the first ones to tell me they'd be closing the road, the council officials didn't even seem to be aware of it at that point. The builders draw up the plans of what they want to do and the council just tinker around the edges. As you say, desperate lack of imagination.

Is the footpath on the south side being restricted? From my reading of the plan the north side footway will be under scaffold but the south side will untouched. The south side is a lot narrower though.

Would be interesting to see the equality impact assessment, I'd hope that access is maintained for those who need a bit more space.

The scaffolding could easily extend out to cover the cycle ways as well, but that would deprive the developers of their free (do they pay?) parking and storage space.

Will the cafe be losing their outside seating?

    Aaaaagh

What is the average half-life of CEC cycling infra before it's closed/roadworked/torn out? Must be pretty low. This sort of thing seems to happen all the time.

edit: oh the closure is at the Morningside Road end, I thought this was going to be at the other end. I stand by my scream though.
