  1. Now. Strangest thing I've seen in a while as we parked to go to the class. This car, with this sign in the back. Erm. 'Near Death Driver'? Does that mean the driver is liable to a heart attack behind the wheel at any moment? Or have they been involved in a crash that almost claimed their life that makes them a particularly nervous driver? Should they be driving in either case??? A bit like the Radio 4 show as I drove home and a guy who had failed a vision test complaining that the DVLA was too narrow in its view (oh, ironic, given the test was for side vision) and they should take into account his opthamologist's view.

Maybe sensible actually, although he damaged his own case by explaining that various factors could make someone fail the test, such as being tired or stressed. Does that mean he'll not get behind the wheel if he's feeling that way? Course not, it's his right to drive. Now, people may say I'm being harsh and that all people have the right to be able to move about under their own steam. True. To a point. Is that right more important than the safety of people around him on a road?

Not so much a near death driver as a near death everyone else.

"Under their own steam" is fair enough, as the speed is limited. Under the steam of wee seabeasties which died millions of years ago before being sucked up to the surface and fractionally distilled is different.

  3. I was possibly being slightly sarcastic at that point... ;)

In conjunction with the "please be patient" sticker I imagine they are just old. Maybe not even that old as it could be sarcasm on their part too! I daresay old people get harrassed by other drivers a lot if they tend to stick at or below the speed limit.

The vision thing reminds me of a friend who was always late for everything, often really late. She claimed she couldn't cycle as she was blind in one eye so we were sympathetic. She still passed her driving test and got a car though.

When I was small the streets of Parentville were infested with wee codgers driving massive powerful cars, over the steering wheels of which many of them could not see the road and the other users thereof. They were mostly quite timid but occasionally they'd fall asleep or not have the strength to brake.

If all drivers (not just those with no sense of taste nor humour) were required to display a sign identifying their type it would be slightly useful, though it's only really the "no idea where I am - may suddenly decide to stop or turn" for whom such a warning would be any use when only visible from the rear.
