I have gone through the blackford ave / charter hall junction from most angles. But today for the first time, I was going from from the meadows south on blackford and turning right onto Charterhall.

There’s a right turn lane there, which I presume is for people making that same manoeuvre.

Except when the light went green, a car coming the opposite way on Blackford ave (ie from Kings bldgs) turned left into the space I was planning to cycle into.

Is that supposed to happen? Maybe I’m just confused because that junction is so wide and has so many legs.

I was slightly concerned because I had told micro-SRD to cycle that way later on, which she did, but said she had no problem.

I had a slight panic that it had said no right turn, but google maps reassures me that there is indeed a right turn lane.

If I understand you correctly then yes, that's the junction working as intended. Both directions of traffic from Blackford Avenue have a green light at the same time, and I don't think there are any banned turns or filter lights for traffic coming from either direction of Blackford Avenue (there's a filter light for folk turning right from Charterhall Road into Maurice Place, but not sure of the phasing).

It's a hideous expanse of tar, ripe for reallocation.

Yeah it does make sense when I think about it, but it threw me totally at the time. I guess because it felt like the guy was coming across the junction. Really second guessed myself.

That right turn is terrible, even in a car. Blackford Safe Routes have long asked for a right-turn filter at that junction.

    Better still, a cyclops-style junction...

@Arellcat - Is that Shell petrol station now the site of the six storey 80s/90s brick built flats?

Thanks - amazing how many petrol stations there used to be in the city. Odd that so many have closed down while the amount of driving has rocketed.

Once the supermarkets started selling petrol was the end for gas stations? Then petrol stations are supermarkets too in a tit for tat? Except that wee Esso one at Canonmills, the rest of the petrol stations do seem to be tied into supermarkets? I mean I am fairly sure this stAtement will be CORRECTED.

Where is the Esso in Canonmills?
I know the M/S BP place near Tesco, but can't picture where the Esso is.

Heading North down Rodney Street on left before junction. Used to be an Esso back in the day. Up the cobble trees the archaeologists have revealed the original Mill Lade the Canon owned.

    Before my time, then. ;)

Wondering if they'll get any good finds during the Powderhall development.

There is also The Jet Garage in Currie which has not been operated by Jet for 15 years.
