AS the frenzied minds of Twitter fixate on a motorhome in Fife, my attention has focused on a more enlightened mode of transport – namely, Leo Tolstoy’s bicycle.

    What have I just read?

As an aside - I've always thought the argument that "We just need to wait a few years, so all the terrible old folk die and we can then achieve nirvana" to be one of the dumbest arguments going. I have heard it made all my adult life, but incredibly - there are still old people (terrible or otherwise) around.

If this argument held any water, surely nine years after the referendum there would now be a clear pro-independence majority in Scotland.

There very well might be one. Pollsters weight by likelihood to vote and that can quite easily account for several percentage points on top of the margin of error - of course if you can't get those young people to actually show up on the day whether they claim to support indy or not is academic, and assuming the young did vote at the expected lower rate it'll be years yet before enough older Unionists die off to account for that.

Of course as you point out it's a dumb argument anyway because it assumes nobody will change their mind on the issue, and while I don't buy the facile "people get more right wing as they get older" self-justification that self-serving people use to pretend they're not that most people's views don't remain totally static either.
