Does anyone have any hot tips on how to find an insurance policy which does not require a Sold Secure bike lock to be valid. My bike has an integrated lock through the wheel and a chain attachment. Neither appear on the Sold Secure list and I can't seem to find an insurance policy which covers theft with the lock I've got. I have no desire to buy another lock!

    Depends.

First question is what is it worth?

Check household policy to see what it covers - if bike ‘cheap’ may be already covered.

Another lock might deter thieves and likely to be cheaper than the insurance excess

But, yes, you’d have extra weight to carry…

Beyond all that I hope other people have recent experience with insurance, especially if they have had to claim, how hard it was and how long it took.

    Has reminded me to check

I am insured but not sure if any of my various locks are compliant?

Presume you need a receipt that states the name of the lock?

@gembo You'll need proof you bought it aye, but beware because some policies also require you to provide proof the lock was attached and defeated, ie pictures of it destroyed at the site of the theft. Bit difficult if the thieves away with it still hooked on or chuck it in a bush somewhere.

I suspect the problem is that many Dutch chain locks, which attach to the frame lock, are rated by the ART Foundation (see https://www.stichtingart.nl/en/home-en/) rather than the UK-based Solid Secure.

I have found the best way to insure my bike is through my home insurance policy - even as an add-on it appears to add almost nothing to the premium. The one time I had a bike stolen (admittedly about 15 years ago), all it took was a call to the insurer with a crime reference number from the police and I had a replacement bike sent to me within a couple of days. No questions about lock type, or much else really.

As above, just through house insurance, had to put replacement values in, and even with 4 bikes and one expensive bike, didn't make all that much odds to the price of the policy.

When I looked specialist insurance cost more than the house insurance + bike addition together, I don't remember there being much difference in cover.

Our house insurance (admiral) require a gold secure lock to an immovable object, at least for our >£500 bikes (which also have to be named).

I have contents cover with NFU Mutual - I have one bike listed as its value is over the single article limit. The rest are covered up to 1k each when out of the house as part of personal items. They only say it must be locked to something immovable ie a lamppost - there is no requirement for a specific level /type of lock.

When I last had a bike stolen (2007) it was on the roof rack of a car. I was asked if the car was an immovable object to which I replied that yes in this context I believed it was and they made no further mention of that clause.

I'm pretty sure that had I said the car was a movable object they would have fought the claim.
