King Charles tells Cop28 summit 'our own survivability will be imperilled' unless we 'restore nature's economy'

King Charles is addressing the conference now. He says he was touched to be asked to speak at the opening of COP21 in Paris, which culminated in the landmark Paris Agreement, and adds “I pray with all my heart that COP28 will be another critical turning point towards genuine transformational action at a time when, already, as scientists have been warning for so long, we are seeing alarming tipping points being
    reached.”

He says we are seeing alarming tipping points being reached and that is greatly worried that we are so far off track in efforts to address the climate crisis.

“Unless we rapidly repair and restore nature’s economy, based on harmony and balance, which is our ultimate sustainer, our own economy and survivability will be imperilled.”

The prime minister’s lack of “consistency” over climate policy was ridiculed by several senior Conservatives, as well as the former US vice president Al Gore, while members of other international delegations said the UK’s incoherent approach meant it was no longer a global leader on climate issues.

The UAE consensus: a deal has been signed – but what kind of deal?

As the deal goes through with stunning swiftness, Cop president Al Jaber has labelled it the “UAE consensus”, writes Fiona Harvey.

But is this a historic deal that will spell the eventual end of fossil fuels? Or will it be one more step on the road to hell?

In the world of climate talks, these two are not mutually exclusive. The text that was presented to delegates on Wednesday morning at Cop28 – and that was adopted a few minutes ago - enjoins countries for the first time to embark on a de facto phase out of fossil fuels. But it cannot require them to do so and it contains “a litany of loopholes”, according to the small island states that are most vulnerable to the impacts of the climate crisis, that will hamper the world from cutting greenhouse gas emissions drastically enough to limit global heating to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels.

There has been more negative reaction to the text from some campaigners, again picking up on the inclusion of carbon capture and storage (CCS) – an unproven technology that has failed to deliver on a commercial scale despite receiving billions in support. “We cannot CCS ourselves out of the problem,” Wopke Hoekstra, the European commissioner for climate action, said last week. “The reality we need to face is that we have to phase out fossil fuels, period.”

“Without these conferences we would be headed for 5 degrees. We’re currently headed for 3 degrees.”
“I thank you for doing everything possible to keep us on the straight and narrow.”
    UN Climate Chief, Simon Stiell

    I feel pretty confident we'll hit 3°.
Denmark's prime minister wanted a stricter agreement. His country though doesn't have any real resources so would find transitioning easier. For an indy Scotland it could be easier. For the UK impossible under any likely new government in a parliament with one green mp out of hundreds in thrall to right wing press.
In Glasgow I almost believed the UK would practice what it preaches. Now we are 'greening' and exploiting the last of the oil in Scotland's waters and pretending that carbon capture can solve it. It's like being at war and mounting an aid programme at the same time (Gaza). Total madness. Sorry I can't be more positive.
