I have a hard time coming to terms with the fact that I build things that aren't really essential. My general feeling is that we all have too much stuff already and making stuff for people to buy, to add to their collection of stuff they don't really need doesn't sit easily with me. But it's how I pay the bills and feed my kids so I think it's worth trying to come to terms with it in a way that makes sense to me.

Steve Shand's company? Knows a fair bit on this and he's right. Ideally LB would be selling locally made cargo bikes from Aerial in Dumfries with an Intradrive motor from Edinburgh. Cost would then be £9k per unit and sales would be less. Fact is that it's hard selling UA Family at £6k and harder still selling bespoke unpowered conventional bikes at £2k to £5k. His customers will make trip here if they really want and stick in a plane hold where the extra weight / cost is fractional.
Velow have the right idea remodelling clasics but that's a niche market?
Our customers sell on their e-cargos so if they make it to twenty years plus it might not be too bad. Our Italian steel Veloes should last longer. All aluminium bikes will suffer failure at some point I suppose.

Lastly we hear that every year there's thousands of unwanted bikes getting chucked. I think about this in our highland observations. I rarely see anyone cycling but you can see bikes in every garage. Many houses have two cars and some have three. These are well used (essential?) but with shorter life than the bikes that are often 1980s models. (Retirees take 'sentimental' bikes with them when they flit from south?).

I saw footage today of the hire bike graveyard somewhere in China. There are literally millions of bikes piled up, acre upon acre: a shameful legacy of what was basically a bicycle version of the dotcom bubble, when everyone and their dog seemed to be setting up a bike share scheme.

The bikes are so staggeringly numerous that you probably couldn't even pay someone to take them away. And so they sit, quietly rusting, most of them never even having carried a single rider.
