blah blah blah, another meaningless headline as the Scotsman descends further towards the Daily Hate :-(

A few years ago I was filling a pair of 150 litre saddle tanks with diesel every few days, I promise that cost more than £100 a fill!! :-o
Maybe it's time for mopeds and Trojan Mini Motors to make a come-back lol

Or people will look to buy cars that are 10% more efficient rather than buying a car on the basis of how much it makes them secretly feel like a racecar driver or fighter pilot?

I am more worried about the two week tank filling time. I'd like to think that would be the ultimate incentive to people to ditch the car but how much impact will it really make?

Joking aside, re-charging time is one of the big barriers to electric vehicles - even if they were the 'answer'.

Spain to lower motorway speed limits.

"Spain will lower motorway speed limits, cut train ticket prices and use more biofuel under an emergency energy-saving initiative because of soaring oil prices brought on by unrest in Libya, an official said Friday."

Been there, done that. UK limits were reduced in '73.

wfb said, limits reduced in 73,
yes and nearly every day since, road works and cones and av speed cameras etc etc etc. £100 to fill up, so what , put less in cost less ! Seriously considering selling my car, it makes me feel like a boy racer and a fighter pilot, and i dont need it. Mrs splitshifts car can be the family truck and we will all use our bikes ! !4 yo son is getting greener by the day ! but he is in the ATC and wants to train to be a fighter pilot. Dont know what that means to his carbon footprint green credentials but his flights are well cool !

I think quite a few drivers are doing this, and then running out of fuel. Putting less in each time only means visiting the pump more often to put less in, so if they're not reducing the number of miles they drive, the only saving is the fractional increase in fuel economy gained by carrying less weight in the car. Perhaps drivers need to put less in, and run out more often, in order to wean themselves off driving everywhere. Perhaps little machines like the Honda Super Cub that do 200mpg are surely what people need if their commutes and errands are longer than what's reasonable for cycling, and if they can't afford to relocate to live closer to amenities.

The Spanish Government seem convinced enough of the merits of a 10kmph speed reduction on their motorways to go ahead and do it. Spanish Minister claims that will reduce fuel consumption by 15% (for a 9% reduction in speed). They are also going to reduce train fares at the same time.

Imagine the howls of rage from the Daily Clarkson if something similar were proposed for the UK!

"The Automobile Association said the UK's unleaded petrol price now stood at a record 130.03p - 2p away from £6 a gallon - with diesel averaging 135.44p."
