Just been for a week away to Carr-Bridge. It is an awesome (or ace to place me in my age group) base for cycling, both off-road and on-road. I took my roadbike. Lovely weather (though breezy) and I managed several mornings-worth of ride, including around Lochindorb (fantastic place) and up to the mountain railway (for the view?). Recommended. Oh - and lots of cake opps.

....and I can thoroughly recommend Aviemore itself for a base for Trail / MTB.
If you have kids, many of the trails are relatively easy, and most of the access and trails can be done off the main roads.
Not that we did it with kids - more like big kids hitting the pub post-ride !!!
Big variety of accomodation, some decent pubs/restaurants (The Bridge Inn being the pick - and it has the bunkhouse next door).
Plus, if you dont fancy the drive, there is the train.
Good to see the site back to normal..........

Did you make it to the best cake shop in the world?

Pedalled up to the funicular? Good effort! The zoom back down the hill must have been a blast

We didn't make it there this year but have been there several times. It is spectacular and with a a great view of the bird/squirrel feeders.
We went to the Mountain Cafe in Aviemore for the first time. That's really good.

Well it might of been except for the really strong side wind (skiing was cancelled). But it was still faster than the ascent! The worst bit of the ascent is in the top part of the forest. After that it is easier (or you just get used to it).
