I have been asked if I would be interested in a cycling holiday in Ireland. Can anyone tell me if an N road is the equivalent of an A road/dual carriageway here, and R roads, are they equivalent to B roads?

I think that is about right. I haven't ever cycled in Ireland but have been driven around it a fair bit. THe motorways are M roads and very good. The N roads are the next grade down and I have found them to be quite variable (same as in Scotland). Not sure where our B and C class roads fit into their scheme. Certainly the wee country roads out in Connemara were all like our C class roads. Occasional bit of European funding producing good road apparently in middle of nowhere. Same as here.

Thank you most helpful. I will need to get maps with the Gaeltacht by the looks of it too, otherwise just not bother about getting lost, well never actually lost, just not where I necessarily wanted to be.
