One morning two crashes

    And both my fault...

First was on the bike path in Whitecraig, where I braked too late on mud with the front brake going downhill. Okay though as softlanding in mud and, more importantly, no one saw me.

Second was whizzing around corner at Salisbury Road coming from Holyrood Park road (no braking). Next thing I knew I was on the floor, somewhat confused. A number of pedestrians helped me up - very nice of them - and fortunately the car behind had stopped in time. My right side was covered in black stuff - so I suppose that a dirty road (rubber/diesel?), combined with a degree of dampness and too much speed caused my downfall (can I blame the tyres as well - gatorskin hardshells?). Had a rather painful shower at work, with several bruises and abrasions along my right side - including my face.

Lesson of the day - don't fall off bike.

That's an acid groove. Hope you and bike are ok.

Almost a year ago to the day I went sliding on a mini roundabout, and found the same black gunge on my shoe, ankle bone (where my sock had been sawn through by tarmac), leg and hip. I was pretty sure it was that dangerous combination of petrol/diesel, rubber and morning dampness. I still have a big patch of discoloured skin as a result of the massive graze.

I felt my bike squirm slightly over that same roundabout this morning, although ever since the slide I've gone canny with my speed and taken as straight a line as possible over it, traffic permitting.

Hope you're not too scraped up to carry on cycling, amir!

Salisbury Road at that point is a disaster. Most pitted surface I have ever cycled on, the roadworks mostly blocking the entrance, and railing at side all combine to create a classic accident spot. Luckily I am always going slow there, as coming from opposite direction.

    Thanks both

No - I have fallen off quite a few times before. Usually I fall on the left side so it is good to get some kind of balance.

Eep. Messy and painful. I've always had to wait for the lights on that turn. It was probably a similar unwholesome substance which took me out on the Mound in December 2004. I've cornered gingerly ever since.

IGlad you've lived to tell the tale and it's your ego that took most of the beating, amir.

've been cornering very gingerly since my off on the ice 2 weeks ago. To the point where I've had to tell myself to get with the plan and stop being a sissy! But there's definitely mornings on certain bits of tarmac where the back wheel gives a slide - I think it's that rubber / oil / diesel / moisture mixture as described above. Particularly noticable now I'm back on the singlespeed. When it's properly wet with rain it doesn't seem nearly as bad as the kind of slidy, slimy, slippy stuff.

Sorry to hear about slide out amir. Particular greasy condition will drop a bike whatever tyres you run...

    Hope bruises subside....

Yep, me too. Downhill towards a mini roundabout then right turn on the A7 by Newtongrange. I have been careful here all week, but this morning was dry and no frost so I was going faster than previously. The road there is like a cheese grater, as I found out to my cost as I slid along on my side. Usual injuries, elbow and knee on the right side. Bit sore but nothing broken. Remind me again why I cycle to work?

It may be possible to claim compensation from the Motor Insurers' Bureau for accidents caused by spillages on the road such as diesel.

    Ha ha!

I am feeling much better today, though I didn't sleep well last night. Was able to go out on the Saturday run with ERC and was okay. Still getting lots of sympathy as well. Best of both worlds!

Following chdot's prompt another thread, I have notified the Salisbury Road problem to Clarence.
