This is barely suitable for the forum, but since it's being mentioned elsewhere and we might even (!!) be able to avoid rehashing the whole debate in depth:

http://www.wrongheaded.org.uk/ - the fight against helmet compulsion

The UK's first helmet law goes before committee on March 10th. There is a petition - please take ten seconds of your life - as well as other details on the site.

There are only a few days - such is our wonderful system - so please don't sit on your hands, if you're inclined to be sympathetic towards choice.

Ticked and commented. I find the progression of this Bill to be setting an extremely dangerous precedent.

Hmm, they're going to lose a few by insisting that the 'Address #2' line is filled in.

@cb - I think they have to for these sorts of "official" petitions that they hand in to Government?

I don't have an address line #2 and it didn't seem to mind?

Hmm, it seemed to insist upon if for me so I had to split the house number and street name onto seperate lines. Hopefully just me then...

Min - the NI Assembly Environment Committee took its first evidence session on the Bill yesterday. If anyone fancies submitting evidence on this Bill directly to the Committee then they can do so by emailing it to:

    doecommittee@niassembly.gov.uk

The Bill and accompanying documents are available at:

    http://www.niassembly.gov.uk/legislation/primary/2010/nia9_10.htm

Closing date for sumissions is Monday (14 March 2011).

This process is likely to grind on for at least a couple of months. I really don't think this Bill is a goer, as the police and civil service oppose it. Still, stranger things have happened.

Thank you Morningsider. I wasn't sure whether the 10th March date was the final vote or what.

So CityCycling's legal eagle might has miss-called this one then...

Quick update on my previous post. The NI Bill will fall on 24th March when the Assembly is dissolved for elections on 5 May. The Bill will have to be re-introduced following the election, effectively starting the process all over again. As it is a members bill this will be up to the individual involved, if they are returned.

In evidence to the Environment Committee the member stated he would have amended the Bill at the next stage to apply to children only and it is likely that, if he re-introduces the Bill, that this will be the case.

So, not a victory for anti-compulsion campaigners as it is likely to return, but in quite a different format. Also, a majority of the Environment Committee seemed to be against helmet compulsion (official Sinn Fein policy apparently). So, sticking with my prediction that this one will not fly.

Mr Ramsey, a former Mayor of Derry, added:

“It surprised me that some cycling organisations are opposed to the Bill. The reason why it surprises me is that in organised cycling events, even informal rides out, cyclists are invariably helmeted. It also surprised me because the main governing body for cycling racing, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), has made helmets compulsory in all racing events.

    Thank you SKY.
