"6)    Road Rage - Cyclists talk of their journeys on the streets of Los Angeles as if they were campaigns in a war-torn third world country. Motorists who race up from behind, lay on the horn and threaten death turn out to be soccer moms. Bus Operators "asserting" themselves across bike lanes, vehicle passengers who throw things, "right-hooks" and "left-hooks" and "doorings" all add up to a simple journey across town. "

So Edinburgh doesn't seem so bad...

No, Edinburgh is nothing like as bad. When I followed Bike Route 5 across NY state, most of the time it was out in the sticks and therefore reasonably quiet. Cities like Syracuse are more akin to London-meets-Glasgow, but with very few cyclists to be seen. Albany was a little better in that respect, but you still had to be on top of your bike handling skills.

But my biggest fear while riding over there was...the police. Menacing black cruisers with V8 engines, bullbars and guns on display are not the sort of vehicle one feels comfortable in approaching to ask directions, and seeing one in your mirrors coming up from behind is an uncomfortable experience where your sum total of expected roadside interaction has been gleaned from stories exactly like those above, and from television programmes narrated by a retired cop with greying hair and a big frown.

Charlie Beck will have his hands full, and I hope he can bring some order to the roads.
