Three reasons why cycling is joyful
1) It is possible to cycle and sing at the same time. So long as you are not going over too many potholes.
2) I get to ride through a built up area, then through the Innocent Tunnel to pop up in Holyrood Park.
3)Dunno really. Just is.

I have a passenger who sings to me - usually creative variations on 'twinkle, twinkle...' but she has quite a repertoire.

it's better than non-stop howling. and occasionally quite surreal.

Being in touch with the elements, whether it be sun, rain, wind, or whatever the British climate chucks at us, out in it, in your face, seasons passing, but noticing the days getting longer, it getting warmer, going from winter into spring with plants all breaking into flower and blossom, fields of crops showing signs of life, lambs gambolling, calves appearing in the countryside, and then into summer with the crops waving in the fields interspersed with field poppies and other wild flowers, with variations of colour and wonderful smells (some less than appealing like barnyard or muckspreading but hey, all natural), then autumnal days with a nippy edge, musty smells and fungi, all the trees dressed in their finest foliage of fiery oranges, yellows and browns. Appreciating your surroundings and feeling it all....equals happiness. Taking time to stop and look around too whilst on the road and admiring the view. Last year the aniseed/liquorice smell from the yarrows and umbellifers at the roadsides was absolutely wonderful, so fragrant....uplifting. The achievement of getting up that huge hill/climb and the fast descent on the other side....fab!! Freedom.....
