From yesterday's boris bike bliss (Awesome, I do heartily recommend) I had an absolutely awful commute today. Taking off in the wrong gear on princes st, my chain snapped (yes, I hadn't heeded anyone's warning here to get a new one).

So put it back together and trundled up to TBW to get a new one which was duly fitted (twice to take into account the mistake I always make threading it up).

Can you guess what the punchline is as I set off into the wild blue yonder...

Bingo Wingpig. Cue a very slow and skippy 13mph cycle all the way down the towpath to Ingliston, and little bike will be spending another weekend in the post room as I assemble the requisite bits.

Think all the crap on the cycle path and road over winter has just worn everything to oblivion, looking at new chain (well, got that!) cassette, and the dérailleur is a bit crunky, so should probably take the opportunity.

Should I upgrade (using the term very loosely) the acera to an alivio one, they are the same price on the place where I'm looking.

Bad luck stepdoh... I won't dig out my tweet saying "sounds like if it's that worn you should replace both of them..."

Pah, but then I'd have missed the sheer excitement of being nearly squashed by two separate vehicles, and then a relaxing meander down the canal.

I have got a year of heavy use and two chains out of the cassette, so doing not bad. Cheap mech not fully up to task, but can't be bottomed changing all the levers etc to move even further up chain.

Right, bits ordered. Have to limp home tonight, if you see someone travelling unusually slowly, just pretend it's not me

Bits arrived and now on looking forward to ride home. The fettle gods were kind for a change and it all went on with reasonable ease. No doubt there will be a settling in period with some adjusting.

The parts I took off looked really knackered particularly the jockey wheels on the derailleur. Must keep new bits cleaner.

    Woop!

    "You need to go fixed"

Says anth "I have to say, whenever I go back to gears there is a lot to be said for them" at work.

But ah just fixied it already, I don't want to brakie it again.

I'm far too lazy to not have gears.

particularly the jockey wheels on the derailleur

Replacing worn old jockey wheels with new ones with a decent set of sealed bearings is a great way to eek improvements out of the bike (and make it run smoother and quieter) for under £20.
