  1. My Spesh BG Mountain thingies have decided they want to keep hold of the bolts for holding cleats in (actually, all but one of the bolts has rounded off...), but anyway, the ratchets on both shoes for tightening them broke. I'm sure they're only about 18 months old...

Looking for a new commuting shoe and quite fancied the Shimano MT60 in TBC (since I have a gift voucher I can put towards them), especially since they are GoreTex lined. Any views?

(incidentally a BikeRadar review of the shoes says that they were great, but there were issues with the 'retention system' - erm, those would be laces...)

The MT60 looks like the younger brother of my increasingly dead MT70 shoes. GoreTex is great for the winter splashing but they're still shoes - so they work best when you have waterproof trousers covering your ankles, otherwise the water goes in the top and turns your socks soggy! Oh, and they weigh about a kilogram.

Why not try the MO63 and wear Sealskinz socks?

Anth, you can buy replacement ratchets, although that doesn't solve your cleat bolt problem. Or your new shoe urge problem!

anth, I've had a pair of Spesh BG mountain biking shoes that I bought because they were wider and lighter than the others in EBC. If the purchase fairy strikes I'll buy the same brand. I've had about ten years use out of mine though I expect that's much lighter use than yours have had.

  5. I'm on my second pair of the Spesh BG - the first pair lasted a few years and were dead comfy, which is why I went back to them, but I get the feeling they've become a 'cheaper' product in the intervening period (certainly the ratchets are utterly useless compared to how they were!).

@Arellcat - I've only ever had one pair of Sealskinz and found that they let the water in the top and sloshed about inside... Although a couple of reviews have said the MT60 might do the exact same thing!

Although I did take the Sealskinz to their extreme...

I've found it cheaper and more flexible to buy non-waterproof shoes and wear waterproof / windproof booties if it's wet / cold.

Appreciate the scuba-diver look maybe isn't everyones, but it means you can get buy with one pair of shoes and when the booties inevitably wear out you can bin them and get a new pair. Also, properly fitted (with no sock showing over the top to act as a wick) they don't let water in at the top.

I've also never been very fond of Goretex-lined boots for hillwalking in so carried my prejudice over from that. Infact I just don't like the stuff, don't believe it works. Paramo please.

Had a chap on the phone yesterday looking for waterproof over-shoes to wear with his sandals.

In a perverse way, it makes perfect sense!
