I appear to have been convinced by a colleague to have a try at this on Thursday, (:-o how'd that happen?!?)
Anything an ageing berk (who's never watched a race except on telly*, let alone competed) should know before arriving? :-/
*Tour de France so it doesn't count really

Look out for me in an orange vest and carrying a walky-talky. I'll be on marshal duties!

P.S. as for advice - if there's a fast pack getting near your wheel on the corners (they're pretty sharp - either 90 or 180 degrees), take a wide line to let them have the racing line.
P.P.S. enjoy yourself!

Good for you Smudge. But take it easy on those corners.

@smudge - How did it go?
Posted 13 years ago # -
Wasn't able to make it :-( work was dragging on (and on!)
A colleague was planning to go down but I haven't seen him since to find out how he went.
Maybe another week!Posted 13 years ago # -
To be honest you picked a good day to miss. Very cold and visibility and light weren't great.

Dropped into the Crit on Thursday - mostly just to see what goes on - and took a few snaps of the support and main races:

Rain and poor light meant - ahem - "difficult" shooting conditions and the quality isn't great in many of them, but I've included most to include as many riders as possible. Enjoy!

great photos effemm. Appreciate how difficult shooting was - I was standing all on my lonesome marshalling the last hairpin corner in a "showerproof" (i.e. not showerproof) jacket and shorts. Worth it though - the three guys that won the main race (in ERC red :)) put in an epic performance and would have caught and lapped the pack if they hadn't slowed down on the last couple of laps and gone round with no-hands!

Great photos. I had the misfortune of trying the Ingliston Crit series one year. Long story short I ended up in hospital with a smashed collar-bone, a hip bursitis and shoulder to calf road-rash (they clean that with a medicated scourer pad). So I think watching is a sensible option.

I fancy riding along to this on Thursday (2nd last of the year at Ingliston, the season closer is at the East Fortune track) - going to see if I can wangle a pass for the evening and head out with the camera and a picnic straight from work (racing begins at 5.30). Anyone want to join in?

I'll be there anyway helping out - chest infection prevented my attendence previous 2 weeks.
Good photography to be had.

May rock along to this as I need to stretch my legs. Dependent on getting away from work early this pm to watch the TdF live though (and the weather staying fair). :)
Is access from the Highland Show Ground?
Posted 12 years ago # -
Not sure on the access point. Was basically going to ride that way, as if going to the airport, then skip left at the roundabout when almost there.
Probably get there 5.45-6ish. 7.20 the 'main' race sets off. Will be using time between races to sort the Kaff's brakes... Taking the bike out also means I can get round to different bits of the course for photies. Hoping this weather stays!

Go down airport access road, turn left signed for Highland Centre. Turn left at end of that road then quickly right again towards entrace gates/turnstiles for the showground. Sign on is behind the main "big hoose" just inside the showground in the shed-like building.
I'll be there from before 5.

I was at the airport on Monday. The wide open expanse of tarmac made me wonder about the opportunities of acting like a big kid on a bike there. I guess Ingliston is similar. :)
I'll not be signing on - just fancy having a ride out, a watch and a muck-about on my bike.

PS: "I guess Ingliston is similar"
Guess again :)

Please stay dry please stay dry please stay dry

Looks like it might rain getting there, but fine for racing.
Posted 12 years ago # -
Hmmm, looks like a bright patch over my outward route. Glad it (should be) a tailwind coming home. My legs didn't feel like my own this morning (and not in a good way, nae energy at all). Put it this way, glad I'm not racing.
EDIT: Rain on my window suggests it'll now be a slight headwind home. Goddammit!

Hope you caught some good photos - I managed to see about 30 seconds of the races as I ended up guarding the cash / return of racenumbers / return of race licences etc. and never made it out of the race HQ.

Nice pictures, had thought about tagging along but angry theethy child kyboshed that.

I'd have loved to have gone down to watch but had to watch niece and eat steak. Some great photos there.

Some impressive riding on show, including one chap in the main race who appeared to get a water bottle trapped in his rear wheel somewhere, and somehow managed to hold it together as the wheel locked up with water flying everywhere.
And the rumble of expensive carbon fibre thundering by in a group is fab.
Easy to wander around the track to get different vantage points, the fact the sun is behind you as you look at the final hairpin is great for photo ops.
Riding home I was glad to have hooked up with PS at Ingliston as I was suffering in the headwind and he towed me most of the way back (always amazes me how much of a difference it makes having even just one person ahead of you).

I was suffering in the headwind and he towed me most of the way back
I wasn't expecting that and had no-one to hide behind!

Nice pics. Wow that's a sharp corner.
