Sorry this is car based and completely OT. But you are all travelled and knowledgeable folk.

Off to Italy next month and renting a car from Hertz while there. The 'supercover', which I would usually get, for the week is more than the actual hire cost.

Must be the italian drivers, anyhow I was wondering if anyone had used any of the third party 'excess cover' folk to save you having to do this.

Hoping to get Roro used to bike seat while over there so she's good for the nursery run. (shoehorning it back onto topic :) )

I think margins are that tight these days on car hire, the companies who hire out cars are making a profit from selling insurance.

This said, Hertz are not the cheepest form my experience.

Super Cover covers the excess - which for theft is really substantial. We are also going to Italy in May (Tuscany) and have rented with Hertz - so now you are getting me worried. So I would be interested if you find anything out.

BTW - know any good cycle rental outfit out there?

Have taken the supercover any time I've rented a car, as it eliminates the standard £2000 excess to £0, but in italy it appears it's about £18-20 a day.

However, there are now companies that you can pay £50 for a month that then cover you for this excess. So the car hire company charges you, but then you claim it back from this company.

Just wondering if anyone had used any of them and if there are any wrinkles when it comes to claiming from them.

Doesn't answer you're question, but we used to take out the supercover when we first started hiring cars. We quickly stopped when we did some maths around how unlucky you'd need to be to incur car damage that justified taking the extra insurance out. I think back then we worked out we'd need to damage the car (and be charged for it) every fourth holiday in order to warrant it.

Mind you, we've never hired a car in Italy and I understand they have a particularly interesting driving style over there...

Yeah i used one of these third party cover jobs when I hired a car in portugal. Glad did as the rental company charged me £200 for a damaged lock which wasn't damaged when I handed the car back but they were a shower of complete W@****s. They charged my card the £200 but recovered it from the insurance no problem. It was about £15 for 5 days cover and the car was £8 a day. Can't remember the name of the company though. I've been looking for car hire in tuscany for october and have found a lot are cheaper than hertz.
