is a text bite pinched from another thread and (slightly) removed from context.
It's an interesting thought/allegation.
Partly the context is the balance (often discussed here) between neglect and incremental maintenance as the best/most cost effective way of keeping bike(s) in a usable/efficient/safe state.
Another aspect might be the notion of 'better things to do with your time'. That is a longer piece if string.
I suspect most people on here would rather spend time with their bicycle than (for instance) their car - though paradoxically modern cars tend to involve less owner-involvement in upkeep than a bike!
Another subtext might be 'waste too much money on bikes'...
At least they tend to be cheaper than cars.
For some people bikes are transport (pleasant or annoying or both) others it's a 'hobby' or even "pastime" (a word I have always regarded as archaic).
But perhaps some of us need to admit it's an obsession.
