Not Edinburgh or cycling as such, but another indication of the way things are and where they are going.

    "
Centrica blamed the ongoing unrest in the Middle East and the Fukushima nuclear crisis following March's earthquake and tsunami in Japan for pushing up the cost of power. Domestic bills, the energy giant said, do not yet reflect this.

No doubt it will be 'oil/petrol up 25%' before long (though of course that won't be actually retail increase because of taxes).

    More outrage from motoring organisations.

More reason to plan for better cycle facilities and raised house insulation standards, but...

My guess is that rising gas prices will bring shale gas (back) to the UK intead of energy efficiency investment.

Everyone who lives in the central coal belt should do their home work on "fracking"...

OTOH, crude oil prices are slumping (back below $100/barrel) and I suspect a bit of Centrica sandbagging here. Japan will stabilise and the US market for LNG is gone for decades so I wouldn't bet the house on high gas prices later this year...

There's been a few articles in BBC news recently about fracking in Lancashire (this one, for instance)

I wonder how much is left underneath West Lothian after the 80 years or so of extraction by mining and roasting. Interestingly, the old methods used the gas as an otherwise worthless by-product to fuel the cracking process. Now we're after gas itself.

Interesting how things come around if you wait long enough..This BBC link describes the Shale Oil Museum in Livi which opened recently. Didn't know it existed. I found out about shale oil there from my regular source of local history, Morrison's checkout area decorations.
