"When is a locked bike store in a private block of flats a 'public place'? When you ask an insurance company to pay up"

I lost my bike (any my partners) to a theif who broke into our common stair and remove both bikes which were locked to the railing. Halifax our insurer refuse to payout.

Last year I bought a £700 bike through the cycle to work scheme. I lost it to a theif in Cambridge where it was locked to a lamp post outside the pub I was in. My insurer then and now is Direct line. I had specifically asked for my bike to be included on the home contents cover. They have a £50 excess and have a comapny they use to source a replacement. I contacted them and they through Evans, delivered me the same model a week later. They did at one time in the process try to wriggle out when I admitted I was in the process of moving up, but I stook to my guns saying I was staying there as I had started my new job and was waitinbg for my family to follow me once the house had been sold.

We left Halifax completely last year as they were hacking me off over my bank accounts also.

I've been with Endsleigh since I was a student. They have always paid up on any claims I've made. Two bikes stolen just before Christmas 2008 from common stair, locked to railings. They replaced the 8 year old bikes with brand new equivalents from Wheelies Direct, I was pretty pleased with the new items. Just covered as part of home contents insurance, a small extra premium but worth it for the peace of mind.

I wonder how insurers will react to the proposed secure on street bike parking?

Hmm, I've been pondering looking for some bike insurance recently (as the value of my fleet steadily outstrips my motor vehicles! :-0 )

Anyone got any particular reccomendations for theft insurance for multiple (3) bikes over the £1k (replacement, each) value mark? :-/

List the bikes as a components (framset, wheelset, groupset etc) rather than as a single item. Each item should then come under the £1k mark, unless of course you have a silly carbon frameset like me!

The other alternative is specialist bike insurance which aint cheap! I got quoted £45 per month for my Cervelo.
