A good example of how not to commute??

And he probably thinks motorists have a bad opinion of cyclists! Lucky to be alive I think.
CityCyclingEdinburgh was launched on the 27th of October 2009 as "an experiment".
IT’S TRUE!
CCE is 15years old!
Well done to ALL posters
It soon became useful and entertaining. There are regular posters, people who add useful info occasionally and plenty more who drop by to watch. That's fine. If you want to add news/comments it's easy to register and become a member.
RULES No personal insults. No swearing.

That's a memorable vid!!
Here's another (not as good).
Do you think maybe he didn't have brakes? I mean, he was taking a big risk regardless, but it really seemed like long after the point where anybody would be slowing up he was just piling on in...
Shame on the camera rider for not following through, since the evidence would probably have been very useful for the drivers of the bus and pickup...
Yep, I think he was uber-hipster narrow-barred courier-type and was showing off quite dramatically. Interesting the reactions from the crowd, not a single person actually going towards the point to see if he was okay - thoguh I guess there was a fair amount of shock on display!
Utterly utterly stupid move, and he got incredibly lucky.
The camera-operator may disapprove all they like but they still performed exactly the same weaving manoeuvre through the stationary traffic in front of the van (whose brake lights went out just as the camera passed); if the camera was on their hat then they didn't even glance behind to check that it was safe to shoot out.
wingpig, that's what I thought. Neither checked for overtaking motorbikes or bikes.
This video is doing the rounds on twitter and causing a bit of 'debate'.
In my humble opinion, both the 'hipster' and camera bike should have stopped behind the taxi.
As a number of people mention they shoot out to the outside of the traffic without a glance to see if anyone is coming down the outside.
It is also worth noting that both of them enter an area of the road which has chevrons on it (and hipster briefly onto wrong side of road). No-one should be on this part of the road including overtaking cyclists!
What also beggars belief is the guy who after watching hipster being sandwiched, then decides to follow???
Is a shame that no-one asks him if he is OK though, even if self inflicted.
On the contrary, the only rule for broken-line hatchings is that you should only enter if safe to do so (which applies, you'd hope, to every bit of road irrespective of paint marks!). You're thinking of solid ones perhaps?
And needless to say it's quite common to use the oncoming lane to overtake ;-)
However, the point about checking for PTW'ers or other cyclists already on the outside is a good one. Perhaps neither rider had headphones on and were unwisely relying on their ears.
Dave, you are correct in the 'only safe to do so' assertion with the broken-lines, I was perhaps over-zealous in my stating that no-one should ever be there.
In this case however the hatching is on approach to an island, so I would argue it is not safe to enter that particular hatching, especially at 20mph with 5 meters before you hit the island. Also with traffic now moving on both sides of the road this hatching is clearly not a 'safe' place to be doing any overtaking, or for that matter is the oncoming lane with a motorbike coming towards you at great speed.
Finally (not in work) managed to check these videos out. Heartstopping stuff! Not got much to add to the comments above, except cannot see how either vehicle (bus or giant pickup) could have done anything to avoid the situation that the cyclist put them in by creeping zooming inbetween them like that.
I got a bit of a fright this morning at Roseburn when the driver of a bread delivery lorry stepped out from infront of his lorry right infront of me. There was a rapid intake of breath from both parties but fortunately disaster was avoided. I didn't see him for the size of his wagon and he obviously didn't see me for the same reason, or hear me because I was a bike. I was going around him as he was stopped in the bus lane (in a waiting box).
This reinforces my opinion that bus / cycle lanes cannot also be loading / parking bays. The two are not mutually or safely compatible.
Just be thankful you didn't hit him, for fear that it would be reported that you were doing 45mph on the pavement and your bike is worth 90 grand...

And that you were clad from head to foot in sparkly bright yellow body-hugging lycra, and with your aero helmet, wrap-around shades and rubber overbooties you looked a bit like the Alien from those movies starring Sigourney Weaver.
